Help Needed with windowed Diablo II LOD

I keep getting the following warning as I re installed Diablo II and LOD

Unhandled Exception: Access_Violation (c0000005)

What is going on here?

Anything and everything, unfortunately. Being an "unhandled exception", there's no way of knowing the culprit just from that message.

The only thing that comes to mind is, if you are trying to play without the CD as 1.12 enables, be sure you

A) did a full (not multiplayer) D2 install
B) copied D2xmusic.mpq and d2xvideo.mpq from the expansion CD to your Diablo II folder.

I forgot to ask: does the game start at all?

With the installation already patched it's likely a DirectX problem. Reinstall DirectX to fix this, v9.0c or better.

If this also does not help it could be a windows permission problem. This normally should happen only under Vista. Check the user account to have admin privilidges and the compatability setting for the game icon.

The last two I had not considered, but since I am considering putting the second version onto a Vista Machine, glad you mentined that bit.

May I ask why you want to play game in windowed mode? I have tried it but the screen was too small and the rest of my desktop was a distraction. If you have discovered a way to enlarge the window to a reasonable size I would sure love to hear how you did that.
