The Quarterdeck - Turn Discussion Thread

Here are some general things I noted from the game (in no particular order because I'm just alt+tabbing between the civ and the forum as I find these ...

1) with 6! first ring forests at blue-dot we have 180 base hammers that could be put towards stealing a wonder sometime if we ever get the research for it.
2) That axe that we just built at PR should move immediately to the eastern front. We already have plenty of Q's for MP in Barbados and can easily build more. We want all the military that we can muster out east to deter TEAM.
3) We have research visibility on TEAM now ... They are going for Calendar
4) due to unexpected unhappyness in Santiago our micro-plan may be slightly off there, but not too much (Barbados gets the Hindu missionary next turn and will start building a worker shortly.
5) Monarchy is now 8-turns at 100%, with -22gpt. This means that after three more turns we can turn on research. We'll have the gold EOT94, turning on research T95, completing T102. We'll have at least 2 cottages maturing by that time and maybe gold online too so this should offset any increases in maintenance from Maracaibo on turns 101 & 102.
6) to prevent Santiago from growing into unhappiness next turn I switched the deer to Havana and the cottage to Santiago. Barbados will pick up the last cottage 2N of Havana after getting the happy from Hinduism so Havana will work deer and the mine. This will allow Havana to complete the missionary next turn, which will then go to Santiago and spread Hindu there for happy.
7) M3 has research visibility on us ... not really a big deal, just something I noticed.
8) Trolls (red) and TEAM (white) are now within range of conflict with their borders touching near the center.
9) A city settled for marble near the center could double our forest-hammers at blue-dot, allowing us to potentially 1-turn steal Taj Mahal wonder if we can get the research in time smug perhaps we could set Taj Mahal as a mini-victory goal for our backward civilization. That would at least give us a target to work towards nod

proposed path for Quechua returning and maintaining visibility along the TEAM border ... plus marble! I'll have to dig up our border agreement and see what we're allowed to settle shhh

6-1/2 forests in blue-dot's BFC = 200 hammers base!!! (the 1/2 is outside but isn't BFC to green either and would get chopped for 24H I think). The two question marks are because if we delay founding cites to the north and west of blue-dot we can chop each of those for 24H each, bringing us up to 252 chopping hammers base, multiplied by 125% gives us 567 Hammers. If we're careful we can micro a 25+ hammer whip overflow the turn before which will get us over well over 600 hammers ... IF we can get Marble and IF we can get Nationalism in time. LETS TRY TO DO THIS AND SCORE A MINI VICTORY!!!

shortest direct tech path to Nationalism is Math (375) > {{currency (570)}} > priesthood (85) > code of laws (500) > civil service (1144) > meditation (114) > philosophy (1144) > Nationalism (2574) == 5936 beakers. Every tech has a pre-requisite (20% research bonus) plus if we pick up currency first on the way it is an optional additional pre-req for Code of Laws (20% additional on that tech) so currency only adds about 450 beakers. Roughly this would total necessary beakers to around 5000. I think that this is doable if we ignore everything else techwise until then. Nationalism also gets us to nationhood civic (drafting) right? Which we can SPI swap into if attacked thereafter (although we'd need military tech for a draftable unit, I think maceman is the earliest???). Taoism founding anytime will give us a clue that this won't work out and we can abort, which won't cost us much anyway since we'll be saving gold and burning through it all at once when we have enough to pick up a tech.

Uh... I think you're planning WAY too far ahead. We haven't even reached the Classical Age. Don't we have Terraces and Libraries to chop out instead?

I think the new worker at Barbados should probably go to San Juan.

As for M3 getting research visibility on us, that means they know we don't have Math/Construction cry If TEAM already has Math for Calendar, it's conceivable M3 could have Math for Construction scared

There's more to Civ than just micro. We need to have some sense of direction at the macro level so that we can guide our micro decisions. There are several things to aim for. Military (specific unit before smashing a neighbor) and Wonders (like Oracle/Taj Mahal) and first-to-tech bonuses (Liberalism, GPPs) are probably the most common.

Setting a goal like nationalism for Taj Mahal gives us something by which to coordinate our research and city and infrastructure towards a common purpose. We will do much better by trying to achieve a goal than just looking ahead one city plan or to the next tech on the tree.

Yes, all I'm saying is that these particular forests around blue-dot could be saved and timed to chop out a wonder. Chopping wonders is a common and powerful way to build them. At our other cities we can chop out terraces and libraries.

What I did in the micro plan is send E towards San Juan right now and the new worker can then stay around Barbados/Havana as needed.

M3 confirmed extension of the NAP until T130, which is why I'm not really concerned about them having research visibility. There will be plenty of time to worry later because T130 is over a month away.

I see than TEAM has covered their workers with an archer. I think that a brief message now would help improve our relations and potentially lead into a safe border down the road.

Message to TEAM Wrote:Dear TEAM

We notice that you are covering your workers in the vicinity of Heartburn while they chop, and you must have noticed our own increased military presence in preparation for our workers. Perhaps we could mutually agree to avoid hostilities on our borders so that we both may improve in peace. If you would promise not to worker-snatch we would willingly agree to the same.

Sincerely,

Turn Played. TEAM offered open borders, but while I was considering whether to accept my internet crashed and I lost connection to the game rant ... When I re-connected the pop-up was gone, but I think that open borders would be a good idea. Sent off this brief message to TEAM explaining the situation.

Quote:Dear TEAM

You'll notice on civstats that I logged in, and then logged out before accepting your Open Borders proposal, and then logged back in to play the turn. My internet crashed immediately after connecting to the game and I was forced to reset it. But I offered you OB again in game.

We currently have a Quechua on your western border, and before entering your territory under the Open Borders I would like to confirm with your team and mine whether scouting is is included in the treaty. I'll notify our team of the OB and we'll get back to you shortly.

Sincerely
Cornflakes (turn player)

M3 now built Kashi Vishwanath ... they now get 1gpt from each of our hindu cities ... nothing we can do about it now unless we take Talking Parrot, but we want the +25% hammer bonus and the happy.

Monarchy now takes 7T of research because of the new library in Barbados. Since we got enough gold this turn to last for 7 turns I put science to 100%. We'll get Monarchy EOT100 jive

Classes begin on Monday for me, and after that I'll only be able to log into the game in the evenings because of the university firewall. I'll try and update the micro-plans to account for the Havana/Santiago tile-swapping and add San Juan.

We should probably cottage over PR's Spices, since we're growing to Size 4 and don't have any other improved tiles.

Did you send the first message to TEAM yet? Same here, classes starting Monday, so I'll be back to evenings (since mornings are spent on PBEM turns).

I did not send the first message for two reasons: (1) their workers had finished their chop and moved on and they did not have any military units at all within sight it wasn't immediately relevant; and (2) we can include it just as well when we contact them regarding scouting as a part of the Open Borders treaty.

So we have to decide our position on scouting ... If TEAM would like to include scouting out our borders as part of the OB, do we allow it in exchange for scouting their borders? Scouting is useful for C&D purposes (which benefits only them because we aren't doing any C&D), but it's also useful for tracking military buildup. I think that we should allow scouting because we are not planning on going to war any time soon, and as long as we keep scouts down in their territory they can't build up military without us seeking. And if they cancel OB we still have advance warning of potential hostilities. What is your opinion?
