Havent read any other threads or lurker yet so atm ded-lurking you.

Azza spreading out his forces is a serious mistake, as is not bringing his CG-warriors along. Perhaps he thought you were gassed after losing those 3 chariots. Losing his C2 chariot like this will hurt his effort.

Can't say you could have done anything otherwise here. Next to rome with no copper meant you had to take the risk or be at his mercy.

Wonder if Serdoa knows that you are fighting, and is considering hitting Azza from the south? Probably just glad he's out of it and expanding merrily along.

There could also be iron to the 'safe' west of you, mabye the contested spot is Azza's metal, and you have some nearby to the west? One can hope.

btw, I did see this but was about to crash. Apparently you are very good luck so please keep ded-lurking us <G>.

Here is the most beautiful city I have ever seen:
that
I renamed it to Beowulf. Seems somewhat appropriate (although if anyone knows of an epic where an important city was conquered from another.. other than the Iliad, that we've already used).. The Aenid is next in logical order but that should be a coastal civ.. maybe silver city. I really hope Azza didn't log in to see "OMGYES" as a city name, I don't want to rub it in. we'll be better off with the war not picking up in 10 turns (although we'll be in much better shape if it does).

so. we have 10 turns to prepare for war. rather, 10 turns to put ourselves in a position that azza would be foolish to go to war. mostly we need lots and lots of spears. iron working comes in 2 turns, we needed it worked asap. I think at least the 2 workers west of the odyssey should head over now, as well as the one N, NE of the odyssey on the forest. (or maybe, alternatively, the worker chopping the forest not in any cities BFC, that will go to Gilgamesh - I am not in such a hurry to complete the settler in Gilgamesh as that city will be the silver city, which requires sailing and a galley to be built before it can be any use). in that case, the N, NE worker is set to chop into the iliad but can be switched to the seettler in the odyssey.

anyway all 3 can reach gilgamesh in 2 turns. Iron working is done in 2 turns so they can start working the iron immediately.
Beowulf is completing a warrior which will turn into a spear. the odyssey has a warrior in que that will turn into a speear, the over flow from the settler (its 10 turns away, but has chops coming in still) will help complete it.

here is a good picture to help us examine the effects of the war:
first, casualties. we lost 6 chariots and a warrior. azza lost a warrior, 2 cities, 2 workers, and 4 chariots.
theodyssey and the iliad are whipped pretty badly. theodyssey has 41 turns of whip unhappy remaining and the Iliad has 27. that sucks but was necessary. however, despite this, we have maintained the #1 GNP spot throughout the entire war, our capital is still #3, and we have reclaimed the #1 spot in score. Azza, on the other hand, is LAST in score now and has absolutely tanked his economy:
our #1 gnp is 59. the rival worst is 23, does that graph look like it could be azza?
we gained 2 workers from the war, but more importantly we gained the Iron spot. This is absolutely CRITICAL. not only does it give us copper units we couldnt have otherwise, but it takes away the possibility of Praets from Azza.
So, all in all, this small war was an overwhelming success for us. dancingdancing
the whip unhappy is keeping currently keeping us from our full potential, BUT - it will wear off. And we will have gold connected in 10-12 turns, and silver connected not long after that. plus we have judaism in 2 cities. in my SP game with thesee same settings I got free religion spreads like crazy, so I expect that to happen here as well. we should revolt to judaism after the settler in theodyssey is built and we have a few spears in place - the revolt to OR can probably wait until we have another civic to go with it (probably HR). the granary in Beowulf and the new cities is probably the only building we need atm anyway, and those cities won't have religion for awhile. or we can revolt after we get writing, we'll see.

here is the MFG graph, which helps explain why azza was finally willing to accept peace. looks like the whips really hurt him too:

the turn rolled as I was writing that report. plako leap frogged us in score again. but I believe from civstats he's still at war with someone.

some notes:
1. we are now only 3 turns from research visibility of azza! yay smile
2. lewwyn, I tinkered slightly with the city tiles in gilgamesh. I switched from the riverside mined hill to the unworked rice, which didn't affect our commerce but gave us 1 more food hammer for the settler. I also switched from th grassland cottage you had us on to the one E, SE. they were both 9 turns from maturing, but that one can be shared by the Iliad. pls priotize cottages that can be shared. note that the plains cottage is only one turn from maturing, so maybe we should work it?
3. i think Achilleus III (I named the fresh cottag4e coming sou8th that) should scout south to the right of azza's empire - we need to find serdoa, with writing and sailing we can get foreign trade routes with him. we can't count on azza for trade routes so that should be a priority. it would also be very nice to find some more civs to the south. diomedes (last survivor of the war) should promote to combat 1 and move to beowulf as soon as we have someone else to serve as mp in the Iliad. im thinking maybe archery after sailing?

anyway, our breakeven is currently 70% on the dot. that will go down with more military and a 5th city frown. we are now 1 turn from iron working, but our gold reserves are dwindling so sailing will take 5 or 6 turns. luckily we'll be able to work more cottages very soon.

someone jumped from 52 to 64 GNP just from the turn rolling frown. Plako, I guess? I guess plako got a tech. he logged in soon after the turn roll but his jump 171 in score was a turn roll thing, so it cant be a new city.

We lost 7 chariots. Azza lost 6.

lewwyn it looks like you have this workboat exploring north:
I don't like that. I think it should loop around south, so when it finishes it will be in the north, closer to the fish when we explore the silver city.
after the galley drops off warrior, settler, and worker (in that order), I think it should move west to explore the land past the mountain that blocked our scout. we can build a second galley at a later date to seettle the larger island and explore east.

Did someone build a wonder that gave a lot of culture to explain the gnp?

ok. well considering 2 of them were sitting ducks smile.

Azza does indeed have 4 cities, so you were right. if I had to guess, he had the same plan as us. when he refused the peace I offered he figured that war would drag on for a bit and just settled elsewhere, not to waste the settler. it was 1 turn premature. so he definitely could have sniped Beauwulf from us smile. his loss! dancing

Only fair, since Bigger keeps big upping your GNP ignoring that like a full quarter of it is Henge/Henge-monuments. wink
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?
