Civ4 windowed mode problem

I play Civ4 in windowed mode. Sometimes it goes back to full screen and removes all saved information, like name, last map setup, direct IP etc. Then it takes a couple of attempts to put back to windowed mode. Has anyone had the same problem and how did you fix it?

Scooter told me how to fix this. In your BTS folder, there is a backup version of the Config file. Replace the config with the back up config and it'll be fixed. But if you log in a second time, it'll write over the backup so you have to do it right away.

I have no idea what causes the problem but it happens to me regularly as well.

I ran into that problem from time to time as well. Once I have configurations that I'm happy with, I make the config file read-only so that the game won't overwrite those settings. If you switch often between windowed and full-screen, go to the config option and set:

Code:
; Specify whether to play in fullscreen mode 0/1/ask
FullScreen = ask

That'll have the game prompt you each time you start it, and you can choose full-screen or windowed at that time.

I believe this kind of thing happens when you play SP, MP, modded game from the same ini/config. You should try to use /altroot, setup different config folders for different kinds of games.

That may be a problem, but I don't think it's the root cause. I get this error even tho I only open BTS for un-modded PBEM games.

Do you use /altroot? USE it. It helps to fight global warming!
But seriously, use /altroot and keep config directories somewhere not in "My Documents". Maybe it is somehow about the Windows protection that prevents normal config saving. At least I don't get ths error since using /altroot.

I am revealing my ignorance, but I have no idea what this means... frown

You have no idea what means /altroot, or Windows protection, or "My Documents", or global warming?

/altroot is what i meant.

It is a Civ4 command line parameter that allows to change the folder where Civ4 stores ini, saves etc. Normally Civ4 stores them in "My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword". If you use /altroot="c:\z\BTS" Civ4 stores everything there instead.
