If they try to run past it, it serves its purpose by giving us cultural depth, ie more warning about the attack, and they will be deeper into our lands when we do hit them with catapults. It will also force them to take a more southerly (longer) route.

We can also use the city as a front harbour to unload units to try to wipe out retreating fast units.

I doubt we should garrison the city strongly. But we can make it easily reinforcable by land and boat.

I'm not sure the opportunity cost is that great. The northwest city is dependant on Tree Huggers expanding borders, so we can get the rice online quickly. And the northeast spots will probably have to wait for a few more tiles to be improved between Eastern Dealers and Forbidden Fruit.

I also think a city there won't be that bad for tensions anyway. If we have a city there, it reduces uncertainty, and the mere threat of a city there. As someone once said about chess, the threat is in itself often more powerful than its realisation.

Let's let it remain a threat, then. smile

I think settling this southwest junk spot quickly is just a terrible idea. Nobody seems to be able to demonstrate the tactical value, and that's just because there isn't much. If it would help, I can push to have a chat with CivPlayers so we can get them to agree with us quicker, and I can bring up the border issue immediately. It would be as simple as "hey, let's not settle any more spots between us ok?" and it's done. As Seven said, I expect them to play smart, and settling this crappy spot between us would not be smart, just like us settling that crappy spot between us would not be smart. I think a 5 minute conversation is about all that's needed for both our team and theirs to agree to that.

I think I'll send them a message now trying to set up a chat. We've got unlimited diplomacy as a tool for a reason, so I think we should use it.

If you're reading this now but not closely following the diplo thread, pop over there to this post and give a thumbs up or down on my attempt to setup a chat:

We should settlle NW - NW of horse ASAP(irrespective of food). Adjust, if food is found. The same arguments will occur, if civpalyers settle a city in that direction. Also, if we are having border talks, then having a city in that location will be to our advantage.

With the development of Eastern Gem Dealers about to ramp up, I think we need to decide if we are to put the National Epic there or not.

Post-CS we can push the city quickly to size 14 and reach +14F (+13F before CS) by using the sea tiles. A temple, a market, ivory, and a forge is enough to get us to 15 happy. There are three hills that can be used for production, apart from the gems.

Otherwise, I think we have come to a consensus that we want Moai and Heroic Epic in Horse Feathers, and the Globe in Starfall (Pink dot) as a draft camp.

Yeah, I think we should, it seems like the best location to me.
I have to run.

I also agree that Eastern Dealers is our National Epic city.

All it needs is HR, civil service for the last grassland irrigation, grow to 14, and a market + library for the specialist slots. Easy as pie.

is our aim to generate random GP from this city for Golden Ages?

is it good to specialize in all cities execpt the NE city? In the NE city, run as many specs as you can?

If you need to force a specialist, you can always run caste and force out either of a scientist, merchant, or artist, whichever is needed.
