Backstory, usually. Though that would then impact how you're expected to act around them in game, as well.
The level in ranger (if it eventuates) would probably also help matters.

As Matt said, mostly backstory. Have you spent any time with druids or elves? Were they shooting at you at the time?

Basically I'm saying they'll sell to people they know for list, if you have to buy it from someone who bought from a druid, that person will expect a profit and it'll cost double. It's not available on every street corner.

Both HP and skill ranks depend partly on what you choose for favored class bonuses. You'll have what I list below, plus any combination of extra hp and extra skill ranks that adds to 3.

15 at level 3. You get them at first level, too. Max of 3 points (current level) in any one skill.

HP is determined by d8?

d8, plus Constitution mod, plus first level bonus.

Either 8 + 2d8 + 3*(Con mod), or 8 + 9 + 3*(Con mod) if you want to take average rolls.

A Ring of protection never goes amiss. Maybe some potions? A relevant toolkit for one of your skills?

HP is determined by your Hit Die, which for monks is d8, yes. First one is maximised, then you roll for each level-up (though Mardoc has said assuming an average roll here is OK if you'd prefer that to rolling)

So Mardoc, ahem, if I bought a left bracer of armor for 500gp, and a right bracer of armor for 500gp, would you let it slide to allow my green lardy self at least some protection?
