Busy preparing the C&D report for this turn, but here're the main highlights:

The northwest:

The southeast:

And last, perhaps the main C&D news for this turn:

Thanks for the pictures, kjm. Several pieces of good news there, with the barb axe moving onto the forested hill (meaning we can found Starfall this turn, although we cannot start farming the corn) and the discovery of UniversCiv borders near our eastern scout. The one piece of bad news is the fact that CivPlayers has now unquestionably seen the ivory near their borders. Maybe we'll be in time to get a city before they do, maybe not...

This turn roll missed me by about 30 minutes, so I won't be able to play for about 12 hours. Apologies.

@Sullla No worries about not being able to play until in 12 hours - leaves us more time to discuss and plan.

CivPlayers did do a 3- and a 2-pop whip late T97, and one of them is almost assuredly a settler, so they might want to rush for a city there, especially with us so close by. On the other hand, they are very weak militarily compared to us right now; on the third, one of our neighbours did tech Horseback Riding this turn; on the fourth, only one team knows Archery among our neighbours, and it's not CivPlayers.

@waterbat Yeah, they do play the Light cavalry overture by Suppé (though the operetta doesn't include any actual cavalry), but the main thing is the first piece, the March of the Finnish Cavalry in the Thirty-Year-War aka Swedish Cavalry March.

What is the plan if they end up settling ivory spot?

cry then rant then hammerhammerhammer

Maybe it's time to start talking "spheres of interest", though that will certainly go over like a lead balloon, especially since we typically adhere to the rule of thumb that the location belongs to whoever gets there "firstest with the mostest", ala the oasis/stone location.

We should position an axe to watch the most likely route toward a CivPlayers settling of the ivory and use that in our diplomatic negotiation, saying we would strongly discourage settlement towards us across the river. I think we can use that as a decent natural boundary. Other than the ivory, there are no resources on our side, so we can say with a straight face there are more resources on the other side of the river, and maybe they should focus on those and not attempt to box us in where we can only fight our way out to expand.

Shit, how best do we get a settler onto the ivory asap? Whip settler, ship him across the lake?

If they have designs on the Ivory I think its more of a "how do we get a Settler onto the Ivory with a sufficient garrison to deter opportunism".

We have 2 axes in the area and there's a lot of jungle... We need some spears.
