I wholeheartedly dislike gchat, so perhaps I would be willing to try an irc

what is it you people dislike about Skype ... jeezus.
Probably best we just find an IRC and move on from this discussion .. >_> screw it. Skype is awesome. Find me a better program with voice chat and group calls ... seriously. Shove all that conspiracy crap aside :3 (but seriously, if you do have a better program for voice chat, maybe we should try that rather than IRCs) ---------------- What about Windows Live messenger?
better programs for group voice chat:
Mumble TeamSpeak 3 even Vent, though the only real redeeming feature of it is when you're playing Defence of the Ancients and conversing in Swedish... Mumble and TS both definitely have a chat window if you're wanting text as well. I believe Vent does also does, but I haven't used it for several years, so I may be recalling incorrectly. Skype is terrible. Requires work-arounds to make it tolerable for use with games, as opposed to coming set up to deal with them nicely. The way chats are organised is extremely exclusionary, and with larger groups becomes positively unwieldly. About the only positive feature is that it will store logs when you're not currently online, which I'm reasonably sure gchat will do as well. Regardless, I don't see a particular reason why we need voice. Text has the added bonus of easily referenced logs, doesn't drop communication speed that much (in fact, can increase it if there are multiple threads occurring in the same channel), and I find I can express myself much clearer with text than I can voice. If you're vetoing gchat (which would be the easiest to implement, given we've mostly shared emails somewhere in this thread), IRC is probably the easiest substitute. Clients are usually fairly small, or there's http://chat.mibbit.com if you don't want to download one. All we'd need then is a server (of which there are quite a few public ones still around) and we'd be good. eh, I guess we could commandeer #Erebus
Its barely used anymore these days ![]() And whats so bad with Windows Live Messenger? One of the people that didn't want to use Skype any more was switching to that ![]() If we go with using #Erebus ... I think Morte can do dice rolls (a bot on the server). Also, there is this nice and easy link to it (using mibbit) on Civfanatics for those who don't have an IRC installed.
We used IRC for live WW and I had channels set up for it. I think that'd be easy.
“The wind went mute and the trees in the forest stood still. It was time for the last tale.”
Commandeering an IRC channel for something completely unrelated isn't generally a considered in good terms, even if the channel was basically dead at the time...
Especially considering how simple it is to create a new channel for whatever you're wanting to do. We could use the same server as you're suggesting if it's public, and would make it easier for you. Also, I've been pushing gchat as the main communication method - what exactly about that makes you think I'm avoiding Skype because of a 'corporate paranoia' angle? -- Don’t forget.

I'm a bit lost in the discussion, but if I understand correctly you guys are thinking about voice chat. We could try it, but it's hard for me. I have difficulty with some accents in the english language and I fear I speak way worse than I write. We could try, but it's likely you'll have to repeat a lot of things, a lot of times.
Yeah, I don't see the point of talking voice, and even IRC shouldn't be needed a lot of the time.
