Later that night, at suppertime, you return to the Guild and find another nice but not extravagant meal. Waiting for you is Marcus, and a fairly mature looking Dwarf. The dwarf has an elaborately braided beard, and a bald head. He wears chainmail and carries a sword at his side.
Marcus introduces each of you to the dwarf, and takes his leave. "Well met!" he booms. "My name is Kilthandaknarthas, but you can call me Kilthan. I'm the Scout you've been hired to escort for this Midsummer's Survey." "We've got the route pretty well planned to go into Soravia this time; the King wants to reclaim the Duchy soon, and for that he needs information. That's where we come in. Our job is information! Not killing! Not negotiation! Sure, from time to time a little killing is necessary, but that's really intended for the second wave in two weeks." "I hope you gentlefolk can keep up with a Dwarf's Pace! We'll do 20 miles a day, at least, and I figure we oughta be able to do 30 in tamer lands! That's if you can keep up! HAHA!" "We'll take three days to go up to Helmsdale, cross the Goliad, and hoof it cross country to Kinbrace. Need to see what's up there. Should take us another three days. Then we'll wander over to Kinnery and Merkern if ye haven't keeled over by then, should take just a couple more. Steal a boat from whatever warlord is in charge this year, give ye lads some beauty sleep on the river back to Heliogabalus, and then a brisk four days back here. Meanwhile of course I'll be taking notes all the way. Should be a nice easy stroll, altogether" "And for threats! Should be just some minor stuff, really - avalanches, raging rivers, and every orc, troll, and bugbear swarming at us like hornets. Nothing to worry about!" "Any questions?" Greetings Kilthan! It is good to see a noble Dwarf to travel with, since our band is not graced with one. That route sounds quite agreeable to me, and trolls and avalanches are no problem for us.
I note that our route seems to travel in the lowlands, from your knowledge, do you think it will be smooth enough for bringing along a wagon? We have extra supplies that it would be handy to have; maybe we can even float that sounds the river and find something else to steal if needed. :D Other than that I don't have any questions, anyone else?
Well met, Kilthandaknarthas. I look forward to pushing myself to keep up with your strapping dwarven pace in the coming expedition.
One query - one of our number has possession of a wagon, that we were looking to take advantage of to facilitate a higher carry capacity than we'd be capable of normally. From what you've described, it seems there would be portions of the trip where needing to being a wagon along with us would be a decided inconvenience. Is that a correct assumption, or would a wagon be perfectly suited to bring along on this expedition? EDIT: Crosspost -- Don’t forget.

Grouk knew the look the dwarf was giving him. If Gunther noticed he probably would have been all offended, but really the dwarf was just reacting reasonably, there were more evil orcs in the world than peaceful half breeds. As long as he was treated without overt insult, he had no issue with the scout.
"Well met yourself, Kilthandaknarthas. I am ready whenever the rest of the party is."

"A wagon could go the same route, sure, but wagons are slow. Unless you're willing to kill your horses pulling the damn thing, there's no way it could keep up with me. Probably take a month to do the same route!"

Hmm. Gunther, let me talk with the stable-hand to see if there are safe lodgings for the wagon. I think, at least for this adventure, there are a few items I'd rather leave at base camp. For instance, since this scout seems to know his stuff, maybe I should leave the portable bridge just this once
![]() (More softly) Although, I guess if the scout were to get killed/ run away, and we got lost ... the bridge might still come in handy ... (louder again) Anyways, I could bring it, but if I leave it here, I could help ppl carry stuff in my own saddlebags, stuff that we had assumed we could bring on the Wagon ^_^
If the scout has an 'unfortunate accident', Bradwyn, we're like to not get paid. A bad deal for all involved.
I sincerely doubt we're going to need that bridge of yours. Any river crossing we're doing looks to be a towns, where there should either already be bridges, or ferries, depending on the width of the river in question. And if you're willing to out with my grappling hook and rope so I can take care of my meals myself, that would be much appreciated. -- Don’t forget.

"Greetings, Kilthandaknarthas." Mara inclined her head politely, as if she hadn't noticed the look the dwarf had given her. "I have a mule for carrying gear, will this fit your intended plan or shall I leave her in stabling?"
...wounding her only makes her more dangerous!
