It seemed like no one else would point out the obvious flaws in the dwarf plan, so Menas had to be the one to talk:
"Wait just a moment, Kilthan. You say we will go to Heliogabalus by boat. I don't know how you plan to make a horse or a poney get in a boat, but I'm sure I won't be trying to help you. Do you even know if the... what did you say?... the river warlord has a boat big enough for this kind of task? I hope you are sure about it, but I don't think you'd want to scout that area if you were...
Besides, do you really plan to steal a boat from river bandits? You realize there's only one way to look for boat thieves, right? It's down the river if you don't know. Suddently we see ourselves followed by a whole group of bandits and we don't even have someone who can use a boat properly. I don't know how frozen the river is at this time of the year, but, personally, dying from drowning or freezing don't make much of a difference to me.
This plan is madness. If we are going on a scout mission, we better do it with horses, which I'm sure the guild would provide to us, and by land. Not legs and boats".

"I don't deal with the damn beasts myself. Horses really won't get in boats? Not even if you hit them with those...uh, I forget the technical term, the spiky things on your feet?"
"Ok, so will they swim? We'd pretty much just want them to float with the current."
"No?"
"I was counting on the river to save us 3 or so days, boating is just so much faster than hoofing it. If we can't do that...well, we still have to cover the same ground, I guess we'll be doing it by foot. Or horse. True, the Guild lends members horses if they ask, just remember they're not warhorses. Just have to push a bit harder for the pace, to get back some of that time.
"I'll walk, though. Never met a horse I couldn't run into the ground."

You start off the next morning, well rested and ready for adventure. Any of you who requested horses have them from the Guild, and of course those who own horses are also mounted. Kilthan is waiting for you at the gate, and when you arrive sets off into the mountains at a brisk pace.
You need to choose a marching order.
As the sun rises, you see that this is going to be a glorious mountain day. The sky is incredibly blue, the snowcapped peaks glisten magnificently, and all you can hear is your own movement and a light breeze through the sparse pines.
Aside from the thin air, nothing hinders you. When you stop for a brief lunch, you notice an eagle, circling fairly close. What do you do?

Marching order: I'll take forward eyes. Gunther at the back, for rear eyes and defence? Menas up near me for forward defence. Bradwyn and Mara split, one behind Menas, one in front of Gunther. That leaves Grouk and Thoven in the middle.
So something like:
Mariel - Menas - Mara - Thoven - Grouk - Bradwyn - Gunther ?
Not sure where Kilthan would fit in that. Probably 50m in front of me, crashing forward as fast as possible and alerting everything within 10km to our presence...

That eagle is circling something. Should we try to find out what? Are we heading in that direction anyway? I'll defer to Kilthandaknarthas' call on the matter, but keeping an eye out for anything else unusual might be an idea.
-- Don’t forget.
Always, somewhere,
someone is fighting for you.
-- As long as you remember her,
you are not alone.

We are escorting Kilthan are we not? Shall we not have him nice and center? With me? Two peas in a pod and I have so much to talk about. How about it Kilt? Can I call you Kilt?
But that bird...

Eagle - Someone should go check that out, that doesn't seem natural. Probably the quietest of us.
---
Marching order - What Mariel said sounds good, but Kilthan must be kept safe in the middle.

*To Mardoc* I borrowed a horse, but I'm not riding at the moment. I tie my horse to a tree while we are eating.
