Diplo with Tropical Trolls

Interesting; thanks. HAK, I think you're keeping track better than I; at some point, would it be possible for you to make a new thread with one post that simply lists all of our current deals and when they expire? I would find it extremely helpful. If you're too busy I can try and search through all the diplo threads and messages to try and compile it; I just thought you might know better off the top of your head or have it written down somewhere.

I don't have it written down anywhere, nor do I have time to search for it all until next week. So if you would like such a thread before then, you may have to search yourself.

That's fine, I just thought you might have it easily-to-hand. If one of us would have to search anyway, I might as well do it!

Brief chat with plako while I was out today (sitting in a Starbucks before running errands):

12:08 PM plako.plako: hi
Gillette has declared war on you
12:09 PM me: Hmm.
That's gonna be troublesome.
12:11 PM Didn't think I had seen many forces near our border, but must have missed something. Guess I'll have to whip out some more military when my turn comes around, if I can.
12:12 PM Though I do know I saw a galley too. So we'll have to protect our western shores as well.
plako.plako: Not much troops visible to me.
but their power graph has been raising
me: yeah, I saw that.
12:14 PM Well, I'll take a look tonight. I'm out (actually sitting in a Starbucks right now) and will be heading off for my tux fitting shortly.
12:15 PM plako.plako: sry for ruining your day. Had to go cya
me: heh. No biggie. It's all in the game. smile
If there's any sort of support you guys can think of for us, let me know. I'm sure anything would be welcome. smile
For now, I'll see ya later. I'm heading out now too.

So he notified me about the war (which I already knew about wink) and I gave some of our planned misleadings, and I tossed in the request for support. We'll see what comes of it all. smile

From Tropical Trolls:

Quote:Hi,

It looks a lot like you've violated our NAP deal and information sharing deal. 1st phony war with Gillette and now gifting units to Gillette. I presume your plan is to give units to Gillette to be used against us in an aggressive war. If that will be the case, your word is worth nothing. You can still fix your reputation. Reclaim your forces and act according to our deals.

A little ticked at this message. We have not violated any NAP, though we have obviously taken steps to act against them. As for our information-sharing deal, did they really expect us to come to them and say, "Trolls, Gillette have approached us with a secret plan to gift them units to take you down. We're going to accept, but just thought we should let you know first"? Jeez. If it was an invasion of the Trolls in violation of our NAP that was proposed, I would have argued against it - in fact, I have, stating specifically I didn't want my reputation tarnished! They have a right to be mad about our duplicity, but not about our breaking of any agreements.

(Also, our information-sharing agreement has technically long-since expired.)

This is a legal war-by-proxy in violation of nothing save what the Trolls wish our agreements entail: namely that they be allowed to leave us all in their dust utterly unfettered by any sort of action their neighbours might take to delay them.

HAK, though I presume you want to continue our planned deception, I think it's obvious the Trolls won't believe us, and that this has ruined any chance for a mutually-beneficial relationship with them in future. Notwithstanding that we just spent all this time gifting catapults to Gillette so we wouldn't become implicated in a war against the Trolls, I think we should now prepare to join Gillette in the field as soon as our NAP expires: it may be necessary for our survival down the road. Plus it would feel good. And what have we got to lose?

This sort of thing happens at least once or twice in most games... it's almost inevitable, as you can rarely stay friends with everyone forever if you have any intention of winning. When someone, usually the score leader, realises that they're about to be betrayed (in however big or small a way), their only option is to try to convince their "former friend" to back down by trying to appeal to their sense of morality (or sometimes greed). The best response to this situation is almost always to stay the course and continue with whatever plan you had previously been working on. Changing plans results in losing the trust of the nation you were supporting, and will not regain the trust of the nation that felt betrayed. In effect, it's a choice between gaining one enemy or gaining two - the former is almost always preferable. smile

From Tropical Trolls:

Quote:Hi,

You're a deal breakers. Now it is time to act honourably and quit the pointless lawyering. To fix this, withdraw your support from Gillette and demand your catapults back.

I guess HAK filled you in, LP? Thank you for the reassurance; we definitely intend to stay the course. And since I don't have an email in my personal inbox from plako, I guess that means he doesn't actually think we did anything wrong in real life ... which means his message is all posturing. I wonder how we should respond? There's not much we can really say ...

Got our first message in quite awhile from the Trolls this morning:
Quote:Menagerie,

Thanks for the map trade. Perhaps we can also stop scouting each other with units at this point? We see no need to maintain a right of passage deal at this point.

Best regards,
The Tropical Trolls
