Here are your starting positions. Everything in the fog is highly likely to change. Even things visible can change, but nature of the starts will remain as well as the immediately visible resources.
Neat. First impressions...Spain start with Darius is awesome short-term, but kind of food-heavy, commerce-light long term. France start is nice and obscenely high foodhammers working just resources.
I'm missing not reading Krill's inevitable start tantrum.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.
Random chat I had this afternoon with Commodore when the pick order was posted, but it was before the starts were posted. Some discussion of pick strategy in here.
Quote:scooter: first pick for us
4th in turn order Commodore: Nice! scooter: i was hoping for 1st or 4th Commodore: 1st or 4th scooter: heh Commodore: Yep, exactly.
Darius, and nothing to sweat.
He's good with far more than seven civs. scooter: heh, yeah
I love that second double-pick later
another perk - if everyone loads up on leaders after us, we can just pick our 2nd leader last and get first dibs on civs too. unlikely, but possible
I imagine HRE falls early and otherwise people mostly go for leaders Commodore: Yeah
I dunno, some potentially very nice combo civs. scooter: synergizing civs would be nice to line up the starting techs and still get decent UB/UU/etc
yeah Commodore: Still like Korea or Maya with Sumer scooter: yeah Commodore: Need to see starts for that.
Heh, Darius again. scooter: i'm not sure what I'd want to pair with darius
can't really go wrong
leader-wise Commodore: Imp to "feed" cities to the Org can be very nice. scooter: darius might still make sense as a f under
yeah true. though I wonder how far apart we'll be
pb6 that sort of thing wasn't viable for quite awhile
it's not going to be like inland sea where you're 6 tiles away from each other I don't think Commodore: Although attractive as it is on paper, I need to remind myself that Exp is better for pure expansion. scooter: yeah Commodore: Peter isn't bad. scooter: if we decide we want darius to be funder, we should definitely be thinking some sort of PHI for an academy Commodore: Lizzie might actually last. scooter: well, can't do dual FINs Commodore: Hrm? Right, that vote for changes. scooter: wait which vote won out? can we duplicate traits on a team or not?
last i saw it was tied Commodore: Yeah, it is may share a trait
So Liz/Darius might be doable scooter: well I think in that case people may try to load up on FINs Commodore: Zara/Mehmed need consideration too. scooter: i would be surprised if lizzie lasts. if by some miracle she does, fine by me
yeah agreed
if everyone ignores IND in the first 2 rounds, it would be worth considering Commodore: Heheh not happening. scooter: yeah don't think so either Commodore: SMack are first in turn order. scooter: i think it's slightly more likely than lizzie making it Commodore: They're getting Ind scooter: ah right they get the turn picks too
4-5-
i think that's probably still the best spot
at least, if you pick wisely Commodore: Probably, but I'm happy enough with first pick. scooter: yep
odd thing is, best plan may be to use darius as a funder that rexes a bit, paired with someone who stays smaller.
i dunno Commodore: Depends on what the 8-9 picks have open. scooter: yeah Commodore: Darius is the Fisher King, so REX is wonderful scooter: yeah. hopefully this is seafood heavy Commodore: Seriously, slap down a dozen coastal cities and you're great. scooter: no kidding
glh please Commodore: Heheheh scooter: does that apply to both teams? Commodore: Again, Mack is first in turn order. scooter: the wonder
eh, yeah. and they'll take an org Commodore: Hum, not sure on that one. scooter: i bet they take FDR Commodore: He's not at all bad on the settings. scooter: that's such a Mack leader
and yeah
FDR would be nice though. it at least signals their priority is GLH
easier than trying to outguess them
gandhi is another attractive pairing for darius. Commodore: Hah
We are not going to be fast off the mark. scooter: that's ok. if we get good starting techs we can mitigate that a bit
and if myst is one of our 4 techs, early religion makes sense
but gandhi is really nice in the team setup. bulbs are powerful for this kinda thing Commodore: Oh yeah, he's awesome.
Heh, much as I like Org, Fredrick is not on my short list. scooter: might take some luck for him to fall to 7. but someone has got to fall to 7
or 8 rather
and I think immortal over deity makes fin/org similar enough. i'd rather have 2 fins than 2 orgs Commodore: Yeah, agreed.
Zulu/Mali wouldn't be terrible scooter: fin is faster than org really
yeah Commodore: Ragnar! scooter: heh
really don't want agg. would rather just hannibal at that point Commodore: Agreed.
I'd listen to Vicky. scooter: maybe. if you do something like that, might as well go civ-civ at 8-9
since if vicky falls, the difference between here and some of the other 6 leaders available is pretty minimal Commodore: Yeah, I think we'd have a hard time not going civ/civ
Unless we pick something that just needs any generic Agr/Wheel as its pair
France/Ottomen/Egypt all being okay. scooter: right. if there's a good leader there, leader-civ at 8-9 works great. but the civ needs to be picked for perfect techs so we're not stuck with our last civ pick
yeah
france probably being most attractive out of that group Commodore: Right, musketeers are excellent
But I could hear arguments for the other two. scooter: maya would be an ideal civ choice at 8-9 for instance
locks down myst/mining
especially if you go with gandhi or something
if you don't take SPI, then maybe myst is less valauble
*valuable Commodore: If there are seafood starts, one of the Fishing/Mining civs works too. scooter: yeah Commodore: Weirdly enough, Stock Exchanges make England matter.
Rome, screw being Agg, means a lot of safety early on at the price of IW being earlier than ideal. scooter: yeah. insisting on pairing rome with aggressive is why rome's record in games is so abysmal Commodore: Exactly.
It's a nice UU without it.
Makes longbows less needed, just stuff cities with your legions.
I agree that Darius has to be our first pick. I'm a little disappointed that we are last in turn order. It's a huge disadvantage. We'll lose all ties for Wonders, religions, lib, free GPs...
We need to nail down whether we can have duplicates or not. Also I noticed neither of you mentioned Bismark. Possibility I think yet. Though if we can share traits we'll have to see who else. I also think IMP might be okay as a city feeder for darius. so Joao becomes a consideration.

If we get Joao to pair with Darius that would be amazing
That's pretty much my dream pair for this setup - one civ doing the hammer work, one doing the commerce work. Augustus and Bismark are my personal backups if there's no Joao. Then turn Darius into a techer, but make it a wide techer, not a small and tall one, which we can get away with easier because of 1) Joao supplying all the food-hammer units; 2) ORG making city maintenance costs cheaper

I also think that Pericles as a tall techer to Darius's wide commerce feeder would be great.
