New Civilization 5 Expansion - Brave New World

By the end of the game 7 or 8 different trade routes. Just by reading that you see that the scale of those features is all wrong.

3-4 trade routes per city by the end of the game in CIV IV sounds more like it.

Trade routes in Civ IV are just +X commerce with some obscure and not-very-interesting mechanics that make them grow throughout the game. Since they're making trade routes a more prominent mechanic that you actually have some input into in this expansion, it makes complete sense that you get fewer of them.

It does make sense, though it serves to push the game even more into the direction of feeling less like empire managing and more like managing a bunch of citystates. Abstraction in games is necessary. But we are discussing opinions here. I liked the scale of CIV IV more, that´s all.

I guess it depends on how they implement it, for me. Civ IV's system really only makes sense as a general increase in commerce due to trade - the details of the mechanics don't make sense in terms of "routes" at anything above a superficial level. If I asked you how to represent the silk road in civ iv routes for example, you wouldn't have an answer. If this expansion can achieve representation of actual trade routes (which seems like an incredibly low bar), then it will feel much more thematic to me.

I am pretty sure that the expansion will fail at that, although this comes with CIV maps randomization feature.

I am looking forward to EU IV with trade nodes where trade routes are routed through in contrast to the abstract and sometimes silly (but easy manageable) Center of Trade system.
I am not sure if CIV IV would have been better if say the CIV II caravans would have been integrated into the game en masse. The micromanagment necessary would have been mindboggling.

The Total War series has a rather good system in place for trade as well. A minor feature is a reward for the length of trade, something which any other game has yet to get into. (Apart from MOO 1, which did so many things right..)

The 13th spot in Europe is easier than the 5th spot in South America, I assure you smug. Both are significantly more difficult than the 1st spot in CONCACAF.
