Should RB have a facebook presence?

I voted black sheep as I really don't see the good of it, at least at this point and nobody here has made one for it. I think there are other much much higher priorities like getting the actual site up to date first that I don't see the use in contemplating broadening things to be maintained when we can't even maintain what's here right now. Also if we did 'advertise' on facebook having a badly out of date site would just diminish any returns from that anyway.

Plus I don't use facebook at all and definitely not for promoting sites.

Time to work on fixing the foundation before expanding the 2nd story.

This is such a polarizing quote. I both love it and I cringe. Because I both understand it and I see how people outside this forum might perceive it. If elitist means intelligent, discerning, and mature, which I think it does, great. If it means exclusionary and snobbish, which I don't think it does, then bad. I mean we all get a bit uppity at times, but I think we're all very welcoming as well. You simply have to be "elite" (intelligent, discerning, and mature). lol

In short, I concur with Commodore's pithy summation of our community.
“The wind went mute and the trees in the forest stood still. It was time for the last tale.”

I don't see much benefit. I use and enjoy facebook, but I use it almost exclusively to interact and keep in touch with personal friends. I don't even know if I'd bother paying attention to the page as I don't exactly have loads of interest in linking my real facebook account with a goofy internet handle I use on a gaming forum.

Agreed with the consensus around here that updating the front page of the website would be a much more productive task.

I'm against the idea.

I think we are doing well on the membership front already and from a personal standpoint I'd rather not link my Facebook to other forums such as this because I prefer to have some level of anonymity. Plus I have a very strict way of working facebook that I only have close friends as my friends and very few pages for just things I essentially need so it wouldn't fit with me.

I don't see the need for it, I don't see much benefit.

I am not a big fan of the idea either. I try to avoid Facebook as much as I can, given their record on personal data privacy & protection.
Like others I have an account with only a few personal friends and even there I am aware that Facebook will store everything I post/write/message/mail forever.

I don't want to register a new handle for Facebook RB only, I simply don't see the point. On the other hand the suggestion to "upgrade" the portal of the RB site sounds vrey nice, that could be quite interesting to get an overview about what's going on without having to browse all subforums.

I guess I'm one of the few pro this, since I spend a lot of my time on social networks.

I have copyright issues with facebook and IP to protect, and I am not even as paranoid.

And strange that people still somehow read this is a membership drive after me stating the contrary in 2 posts.

Austrian law student Max Schrems sent a request to Facebook to disclose the data they had stored about him (according to European law, Facebook had to comply). Facebook sent him 1200 pages, including tons of stuff he had already deleted on Facebook a long time ago. Maybe some people don't care, but I personally find it disturbing that a social network will store private correspondence forever.

Another thing is the fact that Facebook is tracking your browsing history and will link it to your profile internally (especially if you stay logged into Facebook as default):

Given the fact that pretty much every online service has already been hacked once (Sony PSN , Steam, LoL, etc.) I again find it not very reassuring to trust Facebook that this information will never become public. Besides, it's simply none of their business which sites I visit.

Me think you've quoted the wrong sentence from me?

Yes, I am also concerned.

You've yet to state why it's even being proposed so people obviously have to come up with their own reasons. If you were to provide a reason to expand to facebook people could comment on it.
