my best friend found his (now pregnant) wife through plenty of fish, I think, and I have another friend that found her husband through okcupid. which is strange because I've heard they are both mostly hookup sites.

Being free means higher levels of sketchy people who aren't as dedicated to finding a dating partner and more for sexing. And since they're often popular in urban areas with high hook-up culture that also tends to be true.
That being said, if you can filter past the crap, there's always gems in any population. Many of my friends are also engaged to people they met on OKCupid.
That being said (I'm totally Fiddler On The Roof), it was also a long-running joke with my other friend that every girl he met on OKCupid would stand him up on dates. For an entire summer. But that just might be exclusive to San Francisco girls.

Well, she responded to my first message, so I sent another. Waiting on a response to that one. For now I think I'll stick to one conversation at a time as I get my toes wet, then maybe branch out.
