I'm not too worried. First, CivPlayers doesn't have contact with everyone yet, or OB with all they have met.

Second, we can fight back against an AP victory. We can send our own Hindu missionaries to their largest cities (starting with Tenochtitlan). We can also easily whip a Buddhist missionary in Ditchdigger and spread it in Adventure One. That would probably bring a swing of +7 votes for us, and -7 votes for CivPlayers, at current city sizes, as I understand the AP mechanics.

Third, the diplo effort from CivPlayers seems to be quite limited. They need lots more OBs and agreements if they are to win an AP victory.

I was going to write this in the turn report, but you guys are too fast for me. We write to CivPlayers and tell them politely but firmly that we are not accepting any spreads of Buddhism in our territory. I don't want to have to deal with any of that Apostolic Palace nonsense. I absolutely detest the mechanic whereby CivPlayers can spread their religion to one dinky little city and have the slight possibility to win a religious cheese victory. (I still don't know how such an idiotic design setup ever made it through testing.)

I think that we should plan ahead and tell them that they should not spread Buddhism to us. We really don't want to worry later on when in a position to win about an AP victory. We can also close borders if need be... even though we don't want. In not too long we'll be in theocracy so we won't need to worry. That's my opinion.

What's the current EP situation with CivPlayers? IIRC there are large discounts for Espionage against cities with your state religion.

I agree that we just tell them we don't want it. Especially if they were to attempt to spread it to a city without religion in it since we'd be hoping for a free spread if possible.

We can tell them/ask them that, yeah.

There's not really anything we can do to stop them though, IIRC we have OB as part of our NAP and as Seven mischievously points out we've already broken the "no ROP" part of it. I don't think pointing out how the AP victory is a ridiculous game mechanic carries much weight either.

Fake edit: Well I chased down the original chat and it doesn't really seem to tie the OB specifically to the NAP. So I guess we could cancel OB. We can use that as leverage then - have CivPlayers promise not to spread Buddhism to our cities, and if they're unwilling to promise that we'll be forced to close borders.
I have to run.

Yeah, we broke the no-scouting agreement, though in quite limited ways. We can offer that they use their chariot to scout out some of our cities if they balk at things, eg the ones their chariot is close to: Gourmet Menu, Seven Tribes, French Riviera, and our new fur city as compensation. They still get out ahead in intel that way, since two of these are quite mature and productive cities, that will quickly show new buildings.

Well we didn't really set out to scout them. It was a bit of a consequence of us getting trapped by new city borders, wasn't it? We were mostly just moving through into unexplored territory, whereas they're pretty obviously headed directly into our culture. I don't really care, if they want to scout us out I say we give them the full German treatment and do a full empire scan, TSA style. We'll see all the little bits, jaguar warriors and all.

Moving the missionary through != spreading religion without asking. The latter is a serious no-no.

Our scouting axe was trapped by the borders of CivPlayer cities that they placed down behind him. We moved immediately through to the other side; we most definitely have not been scouting around in their territory. Short of deleting a very valuable Woodsman II axe, I'm not sure what else we could have done.

Quite aside from all the AP shenanigans, CivPlayers gains all sorts of espionage benefits by spreading religion in our territory. If they don't agree to move back their missionary, then we're canceling the Open Borders at the start of next turn. I want a diplo promise from them that they won't be converting our cities.
