Why the Americans?

Literaly EVERY game I start on Civ3 Conquests I start nere the AMERICAN tribes. In my most recent game on a large 60% land continents my ENTIRE continent was American culture group. The Aztecs, Maya, Inca, AND the Americans were the only other people on my continent. I was the ZULU! Does this have anything to do with the culture groups starting near each other option? I'm pretty sure I had it OFF to PREVENT me from starting near... the Americans. My last game it was a small pangea, I was Dutch, and the Maya, Iroquis , Ottomans, and Babylonians were on my continent. Thats half Americans. Now the glass I'm drinking out of right now is smelling like cleaning product and I ALREADY have the darn Flu, so I'll ask you one more question. Why did the game chose the Americans to curse me instead of the say... Asians or Europeans.

Its a known problem when you go "random", with no known solution, as far as I know. The solution I use is to pick my opponents when I set up the game. If you don't include any american cultures in the opponents list, none will show up near you. Choosing your opponents lets you tailor the kind of game you want. If Islands, you can be the only seafarer and pick civs with other attributes, or vice versa, or have a "fair game" and give your opponents, or most of them, the same advantages you have.

The only way I know not to have the Americans as neighbors is to exclude them from the mix. Or do a quick warrior or archer rush to eliminate them if you have to play "random" and they show up.

As long as you're turning off the "culturally linked starting positions" option in the setup menu, this can probably be chalked up to simple coincidence. What's your sample size here? If it's just a handful of games, then it's really not that surprising that you might wind up starting next to the same civilizations more than once. Over a long enough span of time, the civs that start near you will balance out.

Also, bear in mind that with 5 out of 31 civilizations being "American", the odds are actually pretty good that you'll be in a game with at least one of them. In fact, in a game with 7 AI Civs, the odds that NONE of the American civs will be present is only about 38%, so again this isn't that surprising. Now if you start next to the Iroquois 10 games in a row, then something wacky is going on. smile

And if they're really bugging you, you can always 1) select your AI opponents manually or 2) kick their behinds in the Mesoamerica or Age of Discovery Conquests (OCC Aztecs, meet Spanish Conquistadors wink )

I've started next to Joanie ten times in a row (at least). French babes adore me. nod

I actualy heard this was a bug in Civ3 Conquests. I mean, how can you explain that my last game, it was Maya, Iroqouis, Babs, and Vikings on a small map(Vikings didn't last very long though) And in my Zulu game, 6 of the other tribes out of twelve were American. They were the Iroqouis, Maya, Aztecs, Incans, and Americans. 1 2 3 4 5. Five other civilizations were Americans. AND the Iroqouis were the big scary guy in both games. I'm sure it's a bug because every game I start there is ALWAYS a little purplish Incan scout that passes by. I am so utterly sick of them!

I have no question civ has a bug with civs and selection. I have times I started a new game with a "random" civ and got patterns along the line of: Ger, Fra, Ger, Fra, Ger for my "random" civ.

Heh, yea. The Germans seem to be the first Civ the game chooses for the "random" option. That's mainly the reason why I don't use it.
