[SPOILERS] Lewger goes for the Bigwyn

(April 29th, 2013, 03:02)Lewwyn Wrote: Well we could just as easily fort the 2 plains tiles from the lake to the ocean and build a canal that way. Its not necessary to raze the city. 11 pop (less once you capture) could be useful because we wouldn't have to spend time getting it up. I'm actually thinking we might be better off keeping it. Especially if we get a couple buildings. If we raze we'll need more time to rebuild buildings and grow and the new spot doesn't have a food source like the current one since it can steal fish from Paradise Lost. SO yeah consider me in favor of just keeping it at this point.

ok. thats 2v1, and I wasn't 100%, so we'll keep it. Just annoyed that Azza didn't pick the far superior spot to start with - we didn't even have king arthur founded when he founded presets (first or second time), so he could have easily picked the better spot.

there are no plains tiles to fort - to create a canal we just need 1 fort, either on one of the two grassland farms or on the grassland hill.

here's another question: now that we don't appear to be in a race for the Taj, should we consider saving the great person (1 person golden age) we have coming in 2 turns?
advantages: we could use the taj golden age to push the lower half of the tree, and save the GPP golden age for when all of azza's cities are out of revolt. we could push towards economics, possibly grabbing the great merchant, but regardless revolting to free market before that golden age ends (we need feudalism-guilds-banking-paper-education-economics). also if we get a great engineer (22% odds) we could save him for building wall street in the iliad.
disadvantages: I only see one. the only person we could possibly be racing is Plako. he has been saving gold forever (he has like 1800-2k I think). could it be one reason commodore grabbed astronomy is that he saw plako already had nationalism and has been building it? plako has been working the top part of the tree (he beat us to the music great artist) and tried several times to get marble from us. maybe he's saving the gold to burn through once he completes it?
I'll check when I log in again, but I don't think he has been able to get marble. he is IND though. if this is the case, we may be beat even w/ the golden age - and more than likely I am being paranoid and he's saving gold to plow through the bottom part of the tree.

Right now I'm leaning towards using the GA if we get an artist or scientists (78%) and holding off if we get an engineer (22%). Could be talked out of either, though. with the capture gold from presets and muse, we should be able to finish nationalism in 4 turns even w/o a golden age (granted, with more wealth builds than would be necessary with the GA).

Pretty sure that as long as the fort is next to water you can move a naval unit into it, so in this case two forts on plains tiles should link up the canal without using up a grassland.

Using the GA now helps to speed nationalism and Taj both and considering we have no idea about Plako I'd go with the fastest Taj possible.

oh, I see what you mean now. we could even do 1 plains and 1 desert tile. although that creates a longer path so we are probably better off doing the 2 plains tiles.

I'm in favour of desert-plains, but if that makes the supply lines too long then the grass hill is probably best?

No idea on golden ages etc - will let you guys figure that one out...

Although if the GP is an engineer should you just rush the taj?

well, hmm. the arguments against are: we'd rather have the culture in gilgamesh, not shahnahmeh (which doesn't have the hammers to be a legendary city), and that it will only take us 6-7 turns to build it anyway with all the modifiers.
But thats trivial compared to losing it, if we think Plako has nationalism already. I don't, really, but also don't want to risk it and have our nationalism gambit be for naught.

honestly, hoping we get a scientist or artist so I don't have to make that decision.

ok waiting for azza (and honestly ill probably just go to bed and play in the morning, unless he logs in very quickly).. but I did log in and take some pics.

this crap started:

we only have 2 votes anyway (popol and rama's journey, I think)... so I abstained, since I couldnt get xenu elected anyway and didn't want to piss serdoa off.

weird stuffs:
I don't know why xenu declared war, and then they made peeace the next turn. i was hoping xenu would make a grab at conquering some of brick's cities. hopefully he killed some units. probably paranoid about serdoa coming after us, but I would prefer to see these 2 at war frown.

plako's scientist is a bit scary. but he's already used his 1 person golden age. he hasn't played this turn so we'll see what he does with it.

here's the warrior brick gave us:
figured he would do that. anyway since it looks like plako will kill him off very quickly, I'll keep this name to commemorate brick. he'll actually be useful for cheap MP in king arthur or maths so I could send the better units to the front.

don't worry about the el cid notifications, its not azza:

that is a really bad city, I wish there were some seafood over there. I think let it grow tall and hope the barbs build some infastructure, and we can capture it at will later. err, probably should get it before they get a warrior out and chop those forests, though. actually we only need granary, forge, lighthouse, and courthouse for it to be worthwhile.

ok, so here is why I logged in, wanted a picture of plako before he played and possibly turned on science:

so he has been saving gold for 8 or 9 turns now. so, I think if he had nationalism already when he turned off research, he would have built the taj already - or else he's very close and we're probably screwed anyway. but I don't think he was that far ahead.

and it wouldnt make sense for him to be close to nationalism either - why would he not just turn it on and finish instead of saving gold?

so I still favor the plan if we get a scientist or artist, but I think we should consider keeping the engineer if we get the the 22% role (we'll know next turn). even if he turns on now, we have marble up on him and I don't think he could beat us.

if I'm outvoted I don't mind using the engineer for a golden age, though, it just means I'll work only an engineer until we pop another GP in shah and hope for the 60% chance of an engineer. (6gpp for forge engineer, 4 gppp for national epic - doubled during golden age).

probably we won't get an engineer anyway, but wanted to get a consensus just in case.

well it looks like I'll need you to make that decision anyway Lewwyn.

I haven't played this turn yet, but sunrise's server appears to be down.

assuming the game is up again, I'll probably need you to play Thursday (maybe Friday too) to prevent pauses.
going on a double date with a co-worker, his wife, and a girlfriend of his wife that they're hooking me up with smile.
