They can, but its unlikely without the Great Wall, which otherwise sucks and has a big oppurtunity cost.

This is somewhat of a noob question, but is there something you can do against a Great Merchant scouting your territories? I can't remember having lost any great person to anything ever....

You can declare war and kill the Merchant, like what happened to novice/spacemanf in PBEM17 in the only backstab I've seen in the history of this site's MP that can compare with kathlete's of slaze in PB2.

I don't think great merchants get bounced out of borders on a DOW (they can move into any territory w/o open borders, just like caravels and privateers).. so it should be fairly easy to kill them with a DOW

We have barbs on this PB, so Great Wall is mildly more useful.
If GSpy scouting was allowed, I'd gladly pop out a GSpy w/ specialists or something as soon as I got a sizable lead to prevent military action.
Anyway, I am also fine to agree to disagree: Maybe when PB11 is over we can start a PB/PBEM with GSpy scouting on, but this is not the PB for testing stuff, I feel. c:

Thats bad play - firstly only the first can be made in any reasonable time frame (30 turns!) and that is still an enormous cost in unuseful pop, waste of a great person slot, etc.
And for that you get one unkillable sentry. I would never make such a trade, the cost to the economy is way too great.
I just feel this is a marginal case of very little benefit or loss either way - but I don't really care.

I meant first time someone would generate a great spy in a no spies game. Obviously it would be foolish to try to create one with the Great Wall and spy specialists are pretty awful.
And yeah no to AP resolutions and great spy scouts.
