There were about a dozen of these, mostly early ones, in my local library. Then I grabbed a half dozen more at some charity shops and car boot sales. I think I've probably played some I haven't crossed out, but I can't remember the names and they're all much of muchness, thematically.

Aww, you guys have already taken most of mine. I can add Creature of Havoc, which was terrific, and Daggers of Darkness. Plus the Sorcery series, and I also got this cute kiddified set under the Fighting Fantasy brand in the early 90s called The Adventures of Goldhawk.
Getting on a plane tonight, hoping that me and my girlfriend can finish The Crown of Kings on the way. People sitting near us shall think us very odd.

For not using the iOS version, obviously. Because who doesn't like a good Adventure Gamebook, right?

I have finished the iOS version of the "Shamutanti Hills" and I am quite impressed. Some changes between the book and the app:
1) Probably in an effort to reach the average iOS gamer, there are basically continues now. First of all, you can repeat any fight , regardless if you win or lose, until you reach the desired result. If you die through a bad choice, you can also go back to the "paragraph" where you made the choice. Obviously, use of this would be an insult to the battle-hardened fighting fantasy veteran, but since it is completely optional I don't mind it.
2) The fighting system is different. You have a certain number of attack power available and can decide how much you want to invest each round. Investing 0 results in defending which will cut your stamina loss to 1. Not invested attack power carries over to the next round. So basically it's a bit like rock, paper, scissors with the difference that the battle description actually matters now, because if you read "The manticore is getting ready to charge you" he is probably not going for a block.
3) The luck stat has been removed.
4) The story has been expanded in some parts. One example I noticed was at the end of the book you simply walk out of the cave with the girl, while in the app you have the villagers pull you out and can decide if you want to let the girl go first or go first yourself.
5) The map is beautiful. I absolutely enjoy being able to see the route I am taking instead of just reading "go left, then left, then right".
6) There are atmospherical sound background parts which add to the atmosphere, i.e. when you enter a cave you hear waterdrops sounds like in a dripstone cave.
7) If you finish the game your save is stored in the cloud and you get a code which resembles that savegame should you want to use that it to continue in book 2 at a later point in time. That way you can start over many times yet still kepp access to all your different characters.
So all in all at least to me it's well worth the money and a must buy for everyone who liked the books. The average iOS gamer who doesn't care about the original gamebooks and is used to 99 cent apps will probabyl think this is overpriced, but frankly I don't care about those people.
I personally am looking forward to the release of book 2 "Kharé: Cityport of Traps".

Just a comment on this, I completed this twice now and got very different end gear equipment, yet got the same code for both endings, so you may only have the 1 ending you can carry on, however if you replay you get the OPTION of overwriting this it seems

That's strange, the description in the Appstore says:
Quote:"Kharé: Cityport of Traps", is coming soon to the App Store! (Part 2 will load all of your completed Part 1 games to continue your adventure.)
Maybe after entering the code you can pick which character you want to use ? We'll probably only know for sure once part 2 is released.

There are quite a few of Joe Deaver's Lone Wolf series available as PDF's for free (legally) from Project Aon.
My brother bought a few of his adventure books when I was 10 (he was 8), mainly in his Freeway Warrior series, which both of us played significantly. We also bought a few adventure books based around the Irish mythological cycles, unfortuntately I don't remember the titles of those books.
