Comments made by T-Hawk and VoiceOfUnreason prompted me to check what the kill loss ratio was for my game.
So the kills:

After removing settlers, great generals and workers I have 913 kills and 239 losses (20% which where catapults). The final kill ratio is only 3.82, much less than T-Hawk's ~6. I don't consider myself all that weak of a wargamer, so hopefully most of the difference is due to respective tech disparities and paths
At first I thought the lategame would lower that ratio due to air and naval engagements. However, now I think the reverse may be true since land stacks are larger -> more battles fought at very good odds.
Edit: I built 3 ironclads in a futile gesture to stop a single pillaging destroyer -- what uselessness! They should at least be strength ~14.
I also see I never built a single war elephant. hmmm.
