Ironman Ponderings (D1)

Several months ago, I had a short burst of interest in D1, played for a few weeks, did a 3@30, tried a few IM games, and posted these ideas in another forum. It occurs to me that I should post them here, because perhaps others still have the occasional D1 urgings. I wrote this as a standalone ruleset, but clearly it is just a variation on canonical Ironman with extremely restrictive groundrules.

The "Lock In": Strict Ironman Interpretation

1) 3 brand new characters, one of each class, meet in town of fresh game. They may buy and sell items as long as nobody has entered the dungeon.

2) When one characters enters a dungeon level, the others must follow promptly.

3) Upon entering a level, the characters are locked in. They may not exit the level by going upwards. They may only go downwards once the level is cleared of all enemies and barrels.

4) A character may not go to town via a town portal, exit the game, or "Restart in Town". If a character dies, they must be resurrected by the party.

5) If a player is forced out of the game by disconnection, computer problems, etc., that player must return directly to the party (either by walking or taking a TP) without any interaction in town or previously cleared dungeon levels. If the player's character was dead when the computer problem occurred, one of the other party members must cast ressurection before the character can return to the active level.

6) If the party reaches dungeon level 16, Diablo may not be killed until all other enemies are dead.

7) When a party has access to down stairs (the active level is clear and all members are alive), they may opt to suspend the game and continue later. In this case, the characters must leave the game directly. No mules are allowed, and nothing may be taken from town or previous levels. When the team meets on a later date, they go directly to the next level they would have played. If that level does not have a town entrance, a non-party character must enter the game, find the stairs to that level, and set a portal for the party.

8) The game ends when A) the entire party is dead, B) the party cannot progress down because members are dead and no form of resurrection exists on the active level, or C) Diablo is dead. If level 16 is cleared of all monsters and barrels, the game is won (even if some or all party members are dead).

#1 - must be a 3 player game, one of each class

#2,3,4,5,7 - No exit, no muling. Break only at level 5,9,13

Implication - "They may not exit the level by going upwards" means no muling, use only what you can carry down on one trip.
Springs and pools and shrines are good only for that dungeon lvl. Use it or lose it.
(*Evil* Nystul just killed off a whole section of the forge ironman guide - TPKill)
Closes a "loophole" - Leo must die before seeing lvl4.
OUCH, stair traps!

6, 8 - Victory condition - Diablo is the last to die.

Implication - more drain on resources.

Did I miss anything?

I like it. A much harder game but straight forward as in much less "what if...?" and "Can we...?"

I'm actually allowing continuation after any dungeon level, in our typical manner of having another character clear a path and set a portal to the entrance to that level if needed. Only allowing continuation from 5, 9, and 13 would be more straightforward, but so often it is not practical to try to set aside 8+ continuous hours for three people to make sure you can get through caves or hell. Also, if someone lags out and can't back in, by these ground rules the only real solution is to finish the level and stop, so it wouldn't be fair to outlaw that.

"No exit, no muling." may be a bit too condensed smile But that is pretty much what it boils down to. One important implication that you don't mention in your condensed version is that if someone dies, they have to be resurrected before the team can go down.

I'd be interested to give this a run with ya sometime. I've the ironman itchies.

I play rogue or mage best.

Hm. With not much Mana to work with, Sorcerer will be an interesting challenge.

Been doing Immortal Hero with a Sorcerer. The First one died a Hell Caves to, of all things, Illusion Weavers and me being sloppy. And out of shape.

Il_Brutto(IH) finished NM last night. May be a month or two before I get enough game time to finishe the next four level blocks.

I have found THREE rings of engagement with this guy. Illusion Weavers, eat my dust! smoke

I'm back to being pretty rusty at D1, but I would like to give this a try sometime. We'll see if we can snag a third player and find some common timeframe. When do you usually game? I go to work at about 10PM Eastern, so I can't do the late night gaming thing, but the afternoon/early evening is usally pretty open. Weekends are usually wide open as well.

Ooh ooh! That's good time for those in Europe. nod

But before I get too excited, probably best to remind myself the computer is faulty, research is eating up most of my time, and where is my Diablo CD anyway?

If the schedule works out, I am interested.

Oh, my more successful ironman runs involved me being the warrior that's the shield/tank who followed every command given by the team leader/scout/puller (rogue).

Now added to the Ironman rules.

In the FWIW department, I have never seen a barrel on Level 16.

"If level 16 is cleared of all monsters and barrels, the game is won (even if some or all party members are dead)."

Proofreading nit, or perhaps I missed out on some Diablo I fun.

Hmmm, good point! And even if some quirk of fate created the first ever barrel on 16, I suppose the odds of a skeleton popping out (the original reason barrel clearing became an issue in IM scoring) would be pretty slim.

Conclusion: All pink elephants and flying pigs on level 16 must also be cleared in order for the game to be considered won.
