How did you misjudge it? Were the defenders not there last turn?

Didn't realize his unpromoted Janissaries had enough EXP for CG2 - last turn his top Janissary was only CG1. Also, didn't realize how big of a difference Janissary's ability to get CG made them better than Pikes - if memory serves, odds on CG1 Janissaries or Combat 2 Pikes are 25%, CG2 Janissaries are 10%.

That spy revolt proved to be the key. After suiciding my 3 Catapults and 3 Musketeers against his undamaged City Garrison Janissaries, my Combat 2 Cuirassiers started getting 50% odds. I didn't use the Shock/Pinch promotion because then I'd be facing the unit that I didn't have the advantage over, and I didn't feel like taking (essentially) Combat 1 odds against his Pikes until they were all gone.

It took every last hitter I had in the area, even my Sentry Chariot, but I pulled through.

(Sorry, forgot Combat Log... I'll pull it up eventually)

mh and I both pulled Great Generals out of the ordeal:

Time to try extortion:

Those are the two frontline cities. I doubt he'll accept, but if he doesn't, I'll just heal up my stack with that Great Medic and suicide Musketeers into his Janissaries. Spy Visibility proves that the Cascade garrison was pretty much his entire army.

Then I hit end turn, and War Weariness kicked in:

Seriously, 6 unhappy faces?!? This is going to be a shorter war than I thought.

Statue of Zeus frown

Nicely done! I'd also take peace at some point. Remember the lessons of PB9, total conquest and wipeout might net you alot of land, but it's also going to leave you extended and vulnerable and let someone else steal the scraps with minimal investment.

I think we can weather a few more unhappy faces. We're right on the border with his capital, taking it would be an excellent prize. After all, we're currently swamped in the capital's culture. The problem is, can we even take the capital, as well as its surrounding culture, without being crippled and leaving MH ragewarring until we end him?

So another alternative is to leave MH weak, let someone else dogpile him in another direction, and take the land from them.

Definitely planning on taking peace sometime soon-ish; WW is insane, and suiciding Cuirassiers/Muskets won't work in the long run, burns too many hammers. 3 turns to Rifling, would much rather attack with Cavalry/Rifles. Plus need time for Jails/Colloseums/Theaters.

I think the main problem is 'can I hold his capital?' Definitely would like to, has Parthenon, Hanging Gardens, Great Library, and Notre Dame. Judging from Power, I should be able to:

The main news was boring, moved my stack in for healing:

Cassowary's garrison:

He also has three Janissaries near Casino. I'm estimating he'll be able to get about 6-8 Janissaries in Cassowary by two turns (time it takes to get to Cassowary). Doubt I'll be able to get much farther than that - just lucky mh's heading for Printing Press instead of Nationalism.

In other news, Commodore's going to settle a filler next to me:

I should have moved my Catapults 1E of Tief Blau. mh isn't going to attack out with 2 Janissaries and then I'd be able to get them to the front in a reasonable timeframe smoke

mh has 9 Janissaries in Cassowary (his capital) behind 60% cultural defences - ugh. Spy Revolt. Am still kicking myself for not moving the Catapults - if I want to wait for Catapults, I'll need to wait three turns.

Planning on taking peace after the capital - would rather draft Rifles than Muskets.

My C2/Pinch Cuirassiers got 66% odds on his Janissaries hammer. That lead to:

Marching on Casino:

Planning on taking peace after Casserole (city north of Casino, plan to blitz it). WW is absolutely insane:

Finally, killed/lost statistics. I can't believe I've only lost 4 Cuirassiers...

In foreign news, Commodore's picked up Rifling. Expect Rifle conquest against... someone. Either me as a 'stop the runaway' war (tops in GNP, MFG, Land Area/# of cities, Pop... 2nd in food) or mh as a 'pick up easy scraps' war. AT captured two cities from dazed. Rifling in two turns.

I've played with that much war weariness (well, a bit less) for most of pbem46. lol

This is cool to see.
