Wasn't it CivPlayers that was talking about staggered NAPs with us giving us the ability to pick off the weaker teams 1 by 1. Did CFC suggest that to them? If so ... are CFC doing exactly the same thing - staggered NAPs with their surrounding civs while they pick off the Spaniards and now CivFr?
If that read is right - then we can use it as an argument against CFC (and against the dogpile).

Here's how he shows up in gmail: Pascal - popeyou <popeyou at hotmail>. I'm assuming popeyou is his actual internet handle? I do know Moineau is on the team, which I believe is someone you would know as that's a well-known MP name.

Calm down. There is zero chance that CFC is "picking off" CivFr here. Knights or no knights, CFC can't do more than snipe one city or two from CivFr, who has the same military tech level and almost 20 cities worth of population to play around with. If this is a real attack, it's one of the most foolish things that CFC could do. Let's wait for them to respond and find out what's taking place.

I didn't mean that they were picking off CivFr (ok, that is eactly what I said) ... what I mean is that we can spin it as if they look like they are. Playing on the very fear that CivPlayers had re us and pointing that fear at CFC.

Somehow I don't think people will buy that one just yet. If they actually show signs of combat, maybe, but until then it's unlikely anyone believes that attempt at spin. Besides, nobody with half a clue is afraid of CivFr just crumbling.
Theory: they declared war in order to offer a binding 10T treaty with CivFr. They don't want CivFr interfering with CFC opportunistically during their war with Zulu, so the war and subsequent treaty would be an ironclad way of assuring that. It's a common tactic in no-diplo games, and given the CivFr team has been known for being unhelpful in diplo, this may just be CFC's attempt to get a temporary NAP.
Overall it doesn't really matter too much. I chatted with Yossarian briefly to see if he would tell me anything about that war dec, but he just avoided it. I'll post the log later probably when I get the time to clean it up, but it was insignificant.

Draft to CivFr Wrote:CivFr,
I noticed CFC declared war on your team. Any idea why they did that? Just figured I'd check in and make sure you guys weren't in any danger. Let me know if there's anything we can do to help.
Thanks,
scooter - Team RB
My money is an attempt to lock CivFr into an enforced peace treaty so they can not worry about their gains against the Spanish being sniped.
Looks like Scooter beat me to it...

If that's really the case, then they don't trust that team, which is great news.
Possibility 2 is they are trying to get CivFr into a certain segment of the turn order in relation to themselves and the Spanish.
Possibility 3 is they've agreed to a split of Spanish lands with CivFr and are bending (breaking?) the rules about city gifting.
Possibility 4 is they were worried about a particular tactical situation involving CivFr units.
Possibility 5: phony war.
Possibility 6: needing to cancel a trade.
Possibility 7: misclick. (OK, I guess I'm done now.)

In any case, from looking at the really helpful political map above, it appears CivFr is a perfect ally, geographically speaking. Let's make a real effort to court them.

That didn't occur to me but it is a real possibility. That would be bad for us if CFC and CivFr are collaborating...
