Diplomacy Master Thread- Helping Your Opponents Beat Themselves

Quote:Hi Scooter. The German team has played. Looks like a new player - wahl-profi - and that is the quickest they have played in awhile. Also note that they have done a fair bit of slaving over the last two turns.

We are logging in now, and will be declaring war and crossing into their territory.

Good luck to both of us, and may the spirits of the mysterious RNG be on our side.

Strength and honor!

From CivFr:

Quote:Dear Egyptians,

We had a great merchant which was travelling to CFC capital. We had warm them long time ago and they did agree, but now at one turn from ending his journey, they declare war treacherously to prevent him from doing his mission.

Thank you for your assistance proposition, and we would like to hear what you can propose. May be could you declare war at their back to divide their army, or give gold to help us counter their forces?

Best regards,

Mayans

If this message is legit and CFC just went and denied a trade mission to CivFR (and especially if they murdered him, considering wardecs don't kick out Great Merchants), then CFC just done fucked up bad and we can try to get CivFR and UniversCiv to snatch up the old SpanAP lands and hold CFC down as we consolidate the Germanlands.

Woohoo! dancing

That's one major faux pax from CFC! They've just seriously antagonised the #3 power in the game - for absolutely no gain to themselves. It also explains the timing of the Golden Age - they might be close to Guilds, so the GM bulb was of little value, but they were afraid CFC would kill it.

What we hopefully can get out of this:

Open Borders with CivFr
An alliance against CFC
EP spending agreement
Map trade

I think we should be quite honest with CivFr here. Tell them that we are going for a critical militarily tech, and need all our current funds for that. Tell them that we are quite annoyed with CFC ourselves, that we have treaties with them lasting up to T175, but are expecting a war against them then.

CivFr also has a health crunch, and we have lots of health resources. I think we can afford to send at least one of them their way.

Honestly, phony or not that message doesn't include a lot of information for us to go on. I'd probably mention that we have a NAP with CFC until T175, and that we are not really in a position to loan (not give) them gold due to our war with the Germans, but that we are happy to explore possibilities and possibly give strategic advice if CFC is actually moving forces into CivFr's land as well.

A gold deal could be useful sounding out their opinion of us. Though we'll have to be careful, if one of the only first bits of diplomacy we have with them is "muney plz" then they're going to look down on us.

They'll want a ridiculously high interest rate and we'll need to be damn generous with it.

Finally, what are the tactical repercussions of not getting a gold deal from anyone else and delaying Engineering by a turn?

I know GMs don't need OB, but can they enter a (city) tile occupied by someone they're at war with?

Strange play by CFC either way.

I think we don't want the diplomatic debt of having received a loan. We can build wealth instead, and send our 2-movers by Whateveritsnamed to pillage that flood plains town. (I agree that moving on Wismar is a bad idea since the city's not on our "belongs to us" list.)

At any rate if CFC forced CivFr to burn their GM on a GA that's a big faux pas indeed. Let's just tell CivFr "let's be allies".

Here is the gold situation as of T150 (T149 in parentheses):

RB: (585)
WPC: 224 (214)
Spanish: 93 (29)
Apolyton: 82 (57)
Germans: 64 (285)
CivFr: 30 (23)
CivPlayers: 839 (589)
CFC: 997 (777)
Univers: 62 (95)

We are likely to get enough funds to get Engineering next turn. We only need 100g or so, and between capture gold from Wasserburg and hopefully Wombatshausen, pillaging some cottages around Wasserburg, and some wealth builds I think we should have those funds next turn.

CivFr has Construction, HBR, and ivory, so they are militarily secure against CFC. CFC's army is almost entirely knight based in my estimate - very few maces or catapults, so war elephants in decent numbers will stop them cold.
