To his credit, Commodore didn't say anything to attempt to change Lewwyn's mind or influence him. He made the comment and we both talked around it

I think while the no diplo/AI diplo is helpful for the purposes of keeping the game from being a dragging diplo trust-fest, it does have this problem where people want to be able to at least chat about the game, but it's strictly not allowed, which creates a struggle to hold to the letter and not mention anything of it to other players, or to chta a bit but only on 'unspoilery' info, by the players discretion.
