I wonder if an AI would have fought the war better than WPC.
I'd imagine it would be break even since the AI tends to wander.

The AI has one key advantage: they choose to DOW and then do so at a later turn. During the intervening turns the AI is pretty decent at stacking their available offensive units onto one stack it moves towards an enemy city as soon as they DOW. That alone is superior to WPC's tactics. I'm sure there were outside considerations, but a tech-parity slow-mover stack really needs to have all of its units in place before marching up to the enemy city, lest they either attack without enough units to clean up wounded defenders or get attacked without enough of their own defenders to overcome the enemy collateral. WPC fell victim to both of those dangers, which is different from their wandering invasion path.
