[Spoilers] Fintourist and Old Harry have nothing to see here

For the second round, leaders and civs were randomly rolled from the lists of leaders and civs that had not been chosen to be kept in the first round. No restrictions were made to prevent previous pairings from reappearing.

Although perhaps break it into lots of smaller posts, we've got some gaining to do on post count.

Anyway I think perhaps that is the most lukewarm keep vote we could have submitted... thanks Brick! Will we get the full list of what everybody turned down or is that for lurkers eyes only?

On SPI and religion I don't see us racing to code of laws, but depending on required worker techs Hinduism or Judaism would be good. I'd like to see how powerful a HR cottage bureau-cap with a shrine in it can get for research... perhaps oxford and wall st too? Unfortunately I'd guess this will be a map size which nerfs that a bit.

On geography - even with the best or worst leader out there this is the most important factor. I guess we see who we're near and do a bit of research on previous games to figure out how to handle them. Eg yuris will probably be a delightfully quiet neighbour who leaves us in peace while commodore we should attack before he comes after us...

Anyway, more important matters - the naming scheme. What do you think of alphabetical, famous military disasters? Custer's last stand, gallipolli, bay of pigs, etc... has it been done before? This is where I think our ded-lurker could really come into his own! Hydra we need your knowledge...

I don't think that's been done before. Might be fitting, too, depending how this turns out. Just kidding!

So, the first thing to do is make a list of every WWI battle ... just kidding again! We should be able to come up with lots from throughout history without too much trouble, if that's what you guys would like to do, and the names will sound cool. I don't know much of any American military history, though. The capital I'd say has to be ... Cannae: the victor's dream, the vanquished's nightmare.

And hey, not too long and you'll be able to add "Pbem 46" to the list of military disasters. Your poor Indians ...

Oh snap, Civ burn!

Now I have to win.

Before we get the screenshot we probably have some time to kill, so we could just bicker aimlessly ISDG-style or we could work out what our goals are at the start of the game...

Assuming a decent start with an Agri resource and lots of forests do we go for:
- Early religion
- Early Maths
- Early Settlers (then do we settle nearby for economy and solidity or far away to grab territory)
- Early workers
- Early army
I think the number of workers we need will be dictated by how much there is to do, but we'll aim for about two for each settler.

The settling pattern will be dictated a bit by resources, but on this size map and with cylindrical wrap we don't need to pack cities close together. (BTW I like the capital to share cottages with the first few cities and have out-of-sync whipping to keep working them all.)

We can revolt to slavery without penalty, so do we whip early and save the trees until Maths, or do we try to chop out as many settlers as possible early on?

We should assume Buddhism will go to someone bee-lining the Oracle, so Hinduism and Judaism will be our targets (get early org religion before we start building granaries and libraries?)

If we start by Commodore lets just build a ton of bowmen and go kill him. If we don't he'll come get us eventually anyway. (I'm only partly joking here!)

What have I missed?

Hello there,

now that all pairings have been published I plan to comment on our opponents as soon as I find time for it. But first couple of quick comments:
  • Naming theme sounds great! thumbsup
  • I agree with your list of important targets/general outline in the previous post. Of course, all that stuff can't be really evaluated before we see our start and begin scouting.
  • In the general our target must be to get as much as possible rolling as soon as possible. Our traits are not strong enough to win this game with the land parity (e.g. there is Darius in the play). We need more space than our opponents to be competitive so we better start working on it immediately. I think our goal is to match in expansion teams with traits such as EXP & IMP in the early game (or be as close behind as it's humanly possible), and just keep pushing (by any means necessary) when our opponents decrease their pace. shifty
  • I totally agree with cottage sharing if possible
  • I'm ready to slave our pop mercilessly and chop every forest if that provides us the fastest start. We'll see how it looks crazyeye
  • That religion stuff is really difficult to evaluate beforehand. If we are forced to focus on other worker/military techs, I'm fine with adopting a foreign religion spreading it and eventually capturing the shrine using our double promoted maces (or something else)
  • We can and should recognize who we are playing against, but let's not be anymore scared of Commodore than a new face. RNG will be on our side! mischief

Yeah, can't wait to see our start! (Brick, this does not mean that you should hurry! I'm willing to wait a week or two if it means that we get a great map!)
Finished:
PBEM 45G, PB 13, PB 18, PB 38 & PB 49

Cannae is brilliant, thumbsup but did I mention my OCD? It'll need to be city three...

I've got a few so far, some aren't strictly military and we've already got choices for L, S and T. But your knowledge has to be better than mine! We can ignore American history - not much of that anyway - is Classical your speciality? And are there any famous Finnish military misadventures?

- Agincourt
- Bay of Pigs
- Cannae
- D
- E
- F
- Gallipoli
- Hastings
- I
- Jamestown Massacre
- K
- Light Brigade or Little Bighorn?
- Midway
- N
- O
- Peterloo
- Q
- R
- Somme or Stalingrad?
- Tet Offensive or Thermopylae?
- U
- V
- Watling Street
- X
- Y
- Z

The bad news is that we can't have more than 26 cities. Sorry Fintourist...

I couldn't work out how to transfer the spreadsheet I made into here without it losing all the formatting, so here is a picture:

Yellow for FIN, Red for ORG, Blue for PRO and Orange and Green for combinations.

Maybe Serdoa and Pindicooter get the luck to make up for their land/proximity to Commodore in PB8? I'd rate them, Plako, Commodumi and NakorFool as the most likely winners at first glance.

Only three IND civs, I'd hope to start near one of them and relieve them of some early wonders... mischief
