Yeah...my instincts are all going to be off, since I play FFH mostly. Cheap settlers, late Calendar, no magic at all...there's a reason I chose to play a 'casual' game first, where I can always blame the map .
So, Mr. O'Dore gave me a little bit of orientation to my traits. Enough to give me something to think about, anyway. Augustus (Imp, Ind) of China (Agri, Mining, Cho-Ko-Nu, Pavillion) China first: Best starting techs, fairly lackluster UB, decent UU but nothing to write home about. But generally speaking, starting techs are considered most important feature of a civ anyway. So I won the jackpot there . Industrious - well, I want Forges, of course. But also this ought to give me an advantage in wonder chasing, especially early game when they're hammer-limited rather than tech limited. Imp is an odd duck of a trait, because it helps the speed of settlers, but not actually the overall speed of REX. REX is usually limited by commerce potential, not foodhammers. What this does mean, is I ought to have my cities a tad earlier, and have some hammers leftover for other early game toys. And hey, I get wonders at a discount! Also, I get a GG bonus for warring. But it's not AW, and wars still make people fall behind. I won't plan on early wars, although maybe a neighbor won't give me a choice. Most of what I do is going to have to depend on the terrain and neighbors. First priority of course is worker, whatever tech I need for my food (hoping for wet corn!), and possibly Pottery. And Bronze Working. After that, I'll need to pick a wonder to chase, and balance that with REX. Gut feel says I want to go the standard Industrious route of Oracle -> Metal Casting -> Colossus and Forges. But no plan survives contact with the map! Let alone contact with the enemy. Ruff - Fred (Philo / Org) of Japan - not an early game leader by any means. Fishing/Wheel, no REX bonus. Pray he starts inland! I've got to get ahead and stay ahead of him, though, because Philo and Org are both good late game traits, once he's got food and Code of Laws/Education Sian - Cyrus (Char / Imp) of Carthage (Fishing, Mining) Probably even better than me at REX, Cha is bonus to whipping often, which helps Imp. Plus, Mounted UU and Cha = ouchie? Again, hope he's inland. Twinkle - Hammurabi (Agg / Org) of Celtic (Myst, Hunting) That's really sad starting techs. His odds of Hunting food are low, and he starts with a scout. Guerrilla Sword is a sad UU indeed. I think on balance, best leader/civ combo is either me or Ruff. Assuming I can get a nice wonder or two, I ought to be able to swing this to my favor At the moment I see no map, though, and have not thought very much. So, more tomorrow. Hopefully the save comes around regularly.

Agg Gaelic warriors are pretty great, actually...C1, and easy access to G3 with a 50% withdraw. Not at all worth the techs though.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.
I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out. (July 22nd, 2013, 22:08)Commodore Wrote: Agg Gaelic warriors are pretty great, actually...C1, and easy access to G3 with a 50% withdraw. Not at all worth the techs though. Well - yes...if he's fighting an earlyish war. Like, say, a duel. I think that it's a very bad spot in the tech tree, above all. Unless he wins super-decisively, an early war is just going to put him behind. It'll put his victim behind, too, of course. Which is the main reason I like the Cho-Ko-Nu: not that early medieval is a great place to fight either, but as a collateral unit it stays useful for a long time. Numidians: those seem fairly powerful. +50% vs melee, Str 5, means that spears are only a smidgen stronger. Get the Numids a promotion or three, and nothing's going to stop them except horse archers or later units. Again a bit early, but at least as 2-movers they'll keep their value a bit longer. Samurai: a better Mace? Decent but...cho-ko-nu should still have odds. As should cats + anything. All in all - I don't think UU's will matter much. Got some other topics to discuss, but they probably merit a post of their own. Quick summaries to remind me of what to return to:

A Roman in charge of China? Didn't you lurk someone with a theme direction?

That particular site wouldn't work, all the recipes have generic names. But the general concept may be worth it. I dunno that I want to repeat quite that much, though. I'm home for the moment, so I was able to open it up and take a couple pictures. Won't actually play until tonight, though. Gotta get back to work. The wheat is dry, by the way. So non-coastal capital, but coast nearby. I'm thinking settle in place makes the most sense. A very hammer-heavy cap, not a lot of room for cottaging, but Pigs and Floodplains and plains hill ought to give me a pretty decent launchpad. Worker first, research would be Animal Husbandry. But I'm going to think on it for a few hours before I make my move, see if I notice anything I'm overlooking.

What's this?
Someone made a FFH "reality" modmod? Just might have to lurk this thread. Probably quietly, since I know even less about BTS than I did about Planetfall .
You'd be welcome, HK. We can learn together!
At least Commodore will probably correct me if I start talking about researching Code of Laws to hop into Aristocracy . I've already had a couple revised thoughts on the start. First - "not a lot of room for cottaging" is only true late game, and before I chop the forests. Early-mid, there's plenty of cottagable tiles. And honestly, the hills are a very nice bonus as well, given the leader I've got. Second - we could chop out henge, couldn't we? 120 hammers means only 80 base hammers required: either 2 forests + 20 base hammers or 3 forests and use the overflow for something like a settler. Assuming I remember right that a forest is 30 hammers here on Normal BtS. That would be only five early techs that I want yesterday: Animal Husbandry, Bronze, Mysticism, The Wheel, Pottery. Guessing the most logical order is pretty much the order I listed them in. I see why the China start techs are so sexy, though! Prereqs for both Bronze and Pottery already researched is a nice boon. And of course it means we're able to get to AH before our worker is born. Warrior will, I think, head in a circle around the capital. Need to know where to put more cities, most of all!
