I have not played MOO2 recently, and was warned off MOO3 in time not to invest in it, but is there room in this forum for discussions of the other MOO games? I wouldn't want to violate any protocol if those discussions are not welcome here.
MOO2, MOO3 discussions welcome?
|
Discussions about MOO2 and MOO3? That had not occurred to me. Among those active on the current GalCiv/MOO forum at N54, these discussions are already played out. They've been welcome, but simply not taking place recently. Out of sight, out of mind. Plenty of MOO2/MOO3 discussion is taking place at the Stardock forums, even as we speak, and everyone in the GalCiv forum who has had any traces of that itch has had it scratched over there. Thus, it would only be RB Diablo players and general forum inhabitants who've not been tuned in to Civ and GalCiv who might bring this up, and I didn't expect that to occur.
In terms of the gameplay, there is virtually nothing in common between any of the three games bearing the MOO franchise name. There isn't much in common in terms of story elements either. There's really nothing to bring the games together except for the marketing that tried to pretend they were related. They are in the same genre, but that's about the extent of what they have in common. My personal preference would be to keep this forum for MOO use only. Sharing with another game that bears no resemblance to it except in name only would be, in effect, like having Galactic Civilizations fans post to the Civilization forum because they both have the word "Civilization" in the game name. The GalCiv/MOO forum was created by KoP last winter to support MOO3. My passion for MOO, and my (failed) hope that MOO3 would be worth our time, is largely responsible for generating the buzz among RBCiv players for giving that game a whirl. We went, we saw, we gasped in dismay, we fled. Some of the MOO3 players tried GalCiv, which was released around the same time. They tried to stir up interest, and there was some, but it did not gather enough momentum to reach critical mass. Six months later, I tried GalCiv, enjoyed it, and largely because I write a good report, to immerse readers into the experience, I was able to generate buzz. The MOO3 forum was converted to GalCiv. The RB GalCiv community is still buzzing, although there's a bit of a lull now waiting on the expansion pack. I'm solely responsible for kicking up dust around MOO. The reasons are many and need not be enumerated here. As when I organized the Epics for Civ3, many of the game's biggest fans were skeptical about the chances for getting an MOO tourney off the ground. The game is ancient, no longer commercially available, and requires jumping through a couple of hoops to get it to run on today's PC's. Nevertheless, I have managed to stir up buzz and whet appetites, enough to give this a chance to succeed. Will it? That remains to be seen. With Griselda and I in partnership, we've assembled RBO as a framework to support the MOO Imperial tournament. But for that, this forum would not exist. We're doing the RB GalCiv players a favor by giving MOO its own forum and separating the two. In fact, the MOO push also turned out to be the last straw for N54. RB has been toying with the idea of moving the forums for years now, but had not quite reached the point of following through. Discussions between Gris and I about forum support for MOO and alternatives to N54 involved the option of my going it alone with the MOO tourney, setting everything up (including a forum) through my site at the warpcore. I asked if RB was happy with N54, and the answer turned out to be no. Next thing you know, here we are. Many thanks to Gris, and to Bolty for hosting these new digs. As far as discussion goes... no harm in talking, I suppose. Feel free to use this thread to test the waters, if you are interested in MOO2/MOO3 gaming and want to hook up with others of like mind. If folks interested in those games generate enough buzz and create activity, to where RB decides to offer official support, I'm sure Gris would open another forum and you could then move there and enjoy a dedicated forum. Or the general forum might be a better home for your MOO2 interests. Either way is OK, I think. Personally, I am hostile to MOO2, far more than I am to Diablo II's expansion, if that tells you anything. It would not be a good idea for any efforts to organize MOO2 gaming to share this space beyond discussion and preliminary organization, but short of that I won't object. As for MOO3, I'm pretty sure that's dead for RB purposes. We tried our best from the game's release all the way through its patching process. There's no hope for further work from the developers, and the game as it stands leaves much to be desired, to put it mildly. Did you ever play the original Master of Orion? If not, or if it didn't catch your eye at the time, I invite you to have a look around my MOO site. Perhaps you will find something of interest there. We're about to lift off with this MOO tournament, and if you might be interested, you can still get in on the ground floor. Sirian's Master of Orion Page - Sirian

. . . I might start trying to kick up the dust of Master of Magic! :laugh:
Personally I think if the name on the front says Master of Orion, then any MoO topic should be welcome here, regardles of whether it's one, two, three, or even that obscure predecessor to the first Master of Orion whose-name-I-can-never-remember. :unsure: As for me, I'd gladly contribute to MoO2 discussion (and Master of Magic if anyone out there even cares). ^_^ Quote:I asked if RB was happy with N54, and the answer turned out to be no. Next thing you know, here we are. It's just that your timing was impeccable. I'd sent the first email to Bolty on the topic the day before I got your email. -Griselda Quote:or even that obscure predecessor to the first Master of Orion whose-name-I-can-never-remember.I think it was called Starlords, if I remember my trivia from the MOO3 site correctly. And no, I don't care enough to go look it up!
Funny you should mention MOM (Master of Magic). I play pretty much in a cycle, MOO, then when I get beat, which is mostly, I play MOM. When the compluter siezes up (seldom do I lose MOM, but the original version of MOM is pretty buggy, and every once in a while the screen disolves in a bunch of lines. I count that as a victory, and go on to CIV (the original, and in some ways the best. Using what I think is Sirian's criterion, limited micro-management. (compared to CIV 3) Then, if I have time, I will play CIV3 Conquests until defeated or the situation does not appeal any longer. I don't seem to like to play the same game for hours and hours, so my CIV 3 record is full of retirements.
If anyone has a good instructions on getting the patch for MOM, I would be interested. I know there are several, although most MOM sites have disappeared from the internet. Probably by visiting underdogs, which always intimidates me about using too much of their bandwidth. Whatever that is. I have downloaded several patches for CIV, pretty much my only successful downloads. What I ended up with was an icon on the desktop, which I clicked on and it self loaded into the game. None of my other downloads seem to be self loading, and I am pretty lost, once the bar that says the download is loading gets to 100%. Especially when something needs to be unzipped. Why can't they use buttons? Quote:Originally posted by barron of ideas@Apr 2 2004, 04:14 AMI found the Lycanthropy spell is a game killer. Try wiping out all Death Magic spell users first and don't trade away Lycanthropy ever. I also found being heavily Life spells rather than Death seems to influence the probability that enemies getting a hold of Lycanthropy doesn't happen. Other than that, the only crash bugs I remember are an intermittant one with Ice Bolt and Ressurection I think that was the name???) which were confined to the combat screen. Go to your specified location on your hard drive and try launching the patch installer from there. Depending on the product, you may just have to unzip files manually into the appropriate game directory. Whatever the case, there's usually instructions with the patches. Read that first and find out what you need to do.
Hey looking for people who are still playing moo2 online. Can you suggest any players that want to play multi-player. I my-self don't know any one online, so if you can help that would be sweet. Here's my e-mail m.r.nicholas@hotmail.com
Hi RED1980, your BEST bet is to try;
http://lordbrazen.blogspot.com/ On the right-hand panel, try "Community Forum" and "IRC Chat", there was 6 people online just now! These players are HIGHLY skilled but are very friendly and will teach you the ropes... after some crushing defeats that is!! I believe "Anjin" enjoys a casual game, if that's your thing. And they play the DOS version of MOO2 (v1.4b23 patch, available at that site) with DOSBox, so you'll have to have knowledge about that. There are PLENTY of DOSBox guides and help at that Blog & Fourm. Good Luck! |
