* Place to discuss things with teammate(s) and to get lurker advice/comments.
(Here at RB many very experienced players are lurking (i.e. reading but not playing), and especially dedicated lurkers (dedlurker, which only read your thread) are allowed to give plenty of advice and pose questions to a certain extent)
* For educational purposes, both for players and posterity
* Last but not least, it is for FUN :big grin:. Again, both for players and lurkers.

Let's discuss strategy. Normally I am a peaceful guy in my games, which means at the harder levels I don't do as well and I need to be more of warmonger. So ifwe are going to be a more warmongering team, then what civ and leader we choose will backup our. For an aggressive team,if we want to go down that path, then perhaps we should go as Rome. One of the best attacking UU out there and hopefully we can get it before teams start having crossbows. So since if we go for Rome it would be wise to synergise the traits. So we would definitely need an aggressive leader. Considering that the UU of Rome is the forum and that gives a 25%GP bonus on top of a regular market then the second trait would be Philosophical and thus the leader accordingly is Alex So I am proposing Alex of Rome for our leader and civilisation. that is my thoughts, but I will like to hear what you think our path should be.
Reply

Quote:Alexander of Rome
Aggressive: Melee/gunpowder start with Combat 1 promotion, barracks/drydocks built at half cost
Philosophical: +100% GP birth rate, build University at half cost
UU: Praetorian (8/1/45) High base strength
UB: Forum (Market) +25% GP birth rate

Your suggestion of Alexander of Rome is a good one. Nice synergy on the Phi trait + UB. Could make us leap ahead by gaining GP and focus on research as well as being helpfully aggressive.

I was thinking more along the lines of:

Quote:Boadicea of Sumeria
Charismatic: +1 happy/city, -25% xp needed for upgrade, +1 happy for monument/broadcast tower
Aggressive: Melee/gunpowder start with Combat 1 promotion, barracks/drydocks built at half cost.
UU: Vulture (6/1/35) Replaces Axeman, +1 str but -25% against melee units)
UB: Ziggurat (Courthouse) 20 hammers less to build, only 4 to get Forbidden Palace

Downside is wasting a promotion to balance the -25% against melee. The -25% xp makes this less of a problem and when further upgrades happen/tech advances, these units will bring even more bang for the buck. Another upside is a strong UU by getting Bronze working. The cheap Ziggurat helps getting a leg up further on in the game by reducing maintenance.

I'll just quote Plako:

Please say, if you think I'm going over the line here. I strongly recommend going with normally strong leaders that have 1 or even 2 top notch economic or expansion traits. It is good idea to pick a leader having at least one of the top 3 traits i.e. Financial, Expansive or Creative. On Monarch level Organized starts to be decent so you could also consider it, if you want to be a bit original and avoid Top 3 traits. You could potentially make up the trait value difference with superior civ skills, diplomacy, synergetic traits or some other way, but you really should have also original plan then.

Any commentary is good.

My idea is to try a different strategy and see what can be done. It could be a dismal failure, or it could be a winning strategy. But being Boudica of Sumeria means we can get earlier courthouses at priesthood, giving us and advantage on spying.

I think what we should do first is make a list of all of the leaders and civ and see the difference. Considering we are wanting a melee unit, I will only consider those.

Aztecs
UU: Jaguar replaces swordsman, 5str and woodsman promotion
UB: Sacrifice altar replaces courthouse, -50% sacrifice time
Techs: Mysticism and Hunting
If we want to sacrifice a lot, then this is a great civ to have. The UU is one of the weakest, unless you are on a woodland map.

Celts
UU: Gallic Warrior replaces swordsman, Guerilla I
UB: Dun replaces walls, free Guerilla I to all land units
Techs: Mysticism and Hunting
The UU is only a slightly superior swordsman, but if we had a hilly map, then it is useful, but that is unlikely

Greece
UU: Phalanx replaces axeman, +100% defense vs chariots
UB: Odeon replaces colosseum, +3culture +2smile +1smile from hit singles can turn 2 citizens into artists.
Techs: Fishing and Hunting
The Phalanx is the ultimate early UU since it has protection against it's one enemy. The UB has nice benefits.

HRE
UU: Landsknecht replaces pikeman, +100 vs melee
UB: Rathaus replaces courthouse, -75% maintenance
Techs: Mysticism and Hunting
The UB is absolutely awesome and combined with the Org trait means massive empires can be done. The UU is nice.

Inca
UU: Quechua replaces warrior, +100% against archers.
UB: Terrace replaces granary, +2culture
Techs: Mysticism and Agriculture.
Overall great early civilisation since you get to attack the best defenders early and you get free culture with a granary.

Japan
UU: Samurai replaces maceman, 2 first strikes
UB: Shale plant replaces coal plant, +10% hammers
Techs: Fishing and The Wheel
The UU is very strong, but the UB I find is the weakest since I prefer not to build coal plants where possible. Not a great loss the UB, but the weak UB is overcome by a strong UU.

Maya
UU: Holkan replaces spearman, no resource required and immune to first strikes
UB: Ball court replaces colosseum, +3 smile
Techs: Mysticism and Mining
Another very early UU that is mainly useful to ambush civs without metal. Average UB.

NA
UU: Dog Soldier replaces axeman, 4Str +100%melee units
UB: Totem Pole replaces monument, +3exp for archery units
Techs: Fishing and Agriculture
The UU is useful against melee but hopeless against archery. The UB is useful if you wanted lots of archery units, which aren't the best in MP play.

Rome
Already discussed
Techs: Fishing and Mining

Sumeria
Already discussed
Techs: Agriculture and The Wheel

Vikings
UU: Beserker replaces maceman, +10% city attack starts with amphibious
UB: Trading Post replaces harbour, free navigation 1 for naval units
Techs: Fishing and Hunting
Only a slightly better maceman and an average UB. useful for water maps.

Zulu:
UU: Impi replaces spearman, starts with mobility
UB: Ikhanda replaces barracks, -20% maintenance
Techs: Agriculture and Hunting
The combo of the UU and UB is rather nice.

Lets have a look at all the aggressive leaders
Alex and Boudica we have already looked at.
Ragnar: Financial, An obviously strong trait.
Stalin: Industrious, Useful if we want to build lots of wonders, but i doubt we would want to go down that path.
Shaka: Expansive, allows us to build larger cities
Kublai Khan: Creative, cheaper lib and free culture is a good thing.
Genghis Khan: Imperialistic, great warmonger trait and allows faster settlers.
Tokugawa: Protective, generally regarded as the weakest MP trait
Hammurabi: Organised, greater area leaders to a larger army
Montezuma: Spiritual, allows greater freedom in civics choice, which can be the difference in the game.

So far we have two options, Alex of Rome and Boudica of Sumeria. I am leaning towards Boudica of Sumeria as our first option, but we need to have multiple options just in case other teams are thinking along our lines and so we can chooseother leaders or civ in case we have to. Hammurabi of HRE looks a good alternative, since with those traits we could grow a massive army.
Reply

Do you have any objections to starting with scouts instead of warriors?
Reply

I have no objections to scouts instead of warriors. Also, it is stated that the map may put players some distance from eachother. Makes me consider Hammurabi of HRE over Boudica of Sumeria.

A shorthand list of 5 combinations I could be happy to play as, in random order:

*Hammurabi of HRE
*Boudica of Sumeria
*Alexander of Rome
*Kublai Khan of Zulu
*Ragnar of HRE

Could you explain how you came to those pairings?
(Why boudica of sumeria over say Darius/Hammurambi?)
Also, why the strong emphasis on AGG, you know its going to be a large map so it seems likely AGG won't be able to catch more economic traits?
