But yeah, I love those! A theme of anything that would go into a message and make a 14 year old laugh would be great. Bonus points if it makes it into the public log.

Coincidently, this 14 year old read this on his 14th birthday, and made me laugh, so I think that means that you accomplished at least one of your objectives. Here's hoping that you accomplish the rest of them as well smile.

At the time of Pitboss 7, new Pitboss proposals were rather few and far between on RB. In fact it was the first FFA game proposed in the 6 months after Pitboss 4 finished. If I had known ahead of time that Pitboss 7 would turn out like it did, I would have passed and waited for a game without double moves to be proposed. Please don't assume I joined with any bad intentions.

As for Pitboss 4, not sure what you're trying to suggest. The anti-Parkin alliance could have played first on T200 and landed double the number of units they had built, and they still would have all died before the turn was out. The timer split had nothing to do with the failure of their invasion... that was the 36 turns of Golden Age, countless 1-turn techs, 20 turns of drafted Rifles, masses of whipped Cavalry/Cannons and the huge upgraded navy.

Yeah, that was a mistake. To put it in context, at the time I was being hit up by ASM on chat pretty much every day about random stuff, so it was easier than it should have been for a conversation to get derailed. I didn't initiate it, and it was posted in the diplo thread immediately, but the game-related chatting should have happened on the forum.

May as well do a bit of analysis of the various teams while we wait for the game to get started. I only know a handful of the players involved here, so feel free to speak up if you're familiar with someone I'm not. smile

Quote:1. Team Mouthful - Lord Parkin / Arkipeller / Magno_uy (with WilliamLP dedlurking)

The best team, clearly. wink

Seriously, I expect this game will be somewhat trickier than past ones I've been involved with at RB. I expect more difficulty with signing long NAP's than Pitboss 4, and we won't have the protection of Always War like in Pitboss 7 (which is a surprisingly strong early-game dogpile deterrent, given an inability to sign Open Borders, gift units and create international stacks). But even in a worst case scenario, it would be fun to play a more militaristic game for once anyway. Let's just see what happens when it comes time for diplo. smile

Quote:2. Team Blame Caledorn - YossarianLives / Caledorn (with Scooter and Old Harry dedlurking)

I don't know much about YossarianLives except that he's heavily involved with the CFC team in the ISDG. Based on that I'd guess he's a reasonably strong player, but I really don't have much to go on. Arki, perhaps you have more of an idea about him?

I've played with Caledorn in one pitboss game. His civ was on the other side of the world to mine, so we didn't really have much interaction. My impression is that he's good at diplomacy but not a particularly aggressive player - based on monitoring scores he didn't expand particularly quickly and consequently ended up second to last out of five empires. However clearly he will be learning from YossarianLives in this game, so we can't really conclude much from his past games.

Quote:3. [Waiting for teammate's approval to post the name] - Slaze / Maga_R (with Jovan Kukic dedlurking)

I'm looking forward to playing with Slaze. I've seen some of his games and know he's a very talented player, but I've never been in a game with him myself. He's got a well deserved reputation for making the most out of bad situations and putting up a fierce fight to the very end. I have nothing but respect for someone who will fight multiple invading civs at once over every inch of ground they gain.

I don't know much about Maga_R, though he seems nice and well intentioned... perhaps someone else can fill me in? As for Jovan Kukic, I know that he's a very strong player well versed in the game mechanics - evidenced by several Deity wins at CFC, and a large number of duel match victories. As far as I'm aware his experience is mainly with single player and quick online matches. I'm not sure if he's played pitboss before, and not sure how involved he's going to be with this team, but his multiplayer experience will no doubt be of assistance.

All in all a strong team, and not one to cross lightly.

Quote:4. Team Care Bears - Yuufo / Bisons

I haven't played with Yuufo directly, but as far as I can tell he's a reasonably competent player. He's involved with the UCiv team in the ISDG, as well as several civ sites in different languages. I don't know anything about Bisons. Anyone have any personal experience with either of them?

Quote:5. Team "My Little Marathon Cannibal Pony" Classical_Hero / Halvgud (tentatively?)

Classical_Hero is probably the player I'm most familiar with out of this crowd. I've played a number of games both with and against him, as well as subbing for him a number of times. He's played a lot of multiplayer Civ4, but as he himself admits... from all that experience he hasn't really learned as much as he should. To put it more kindly, he enjoys doing things his own way.

On more than one occasion I've offered him advice to improve his play only to see him make the same mistakes over again. I recall one time I subbed for him in a pitboss game and at his request prepared for a surprise attack on an far advanced rival across the sea who foolishly had nothing but Quechas in many of his coastal cities. After weeks of planning I had all the naval units in position for a multi-city strike, then logged in to find on his return Classical_Hero had moved the ship stacks slightly out of position and into full view of the rival for no apparent reason... who promptly used the turn's advance notice to whip/draft/upgrade/rearrange defensive units in all his cities. Needless to say the attack did not succeed following that, which was a bit frustrating given the effort I'd put into planning. I promptly left him to it. smile

I don't have any knowledge about Halvgud, but if he's not the experienced player on the team, then I worry for these guys. I suspect they could do with a lot of lurker help, but even so I can't see them being victorious amongst this crowd.

Quote:6. Bowsling / Aivoturso

I've been involved in one pitboss game with Bowsling that I can recall. He seemed reasonably involved with diplo, and keen on wonders, but not particularly strong in expansion. He appeared content with his small empire, never went to war, signed a NAP with his much stronger neighbour and pretty much gifted away his entire economy near the end. He finished in last place out of the surviving civs.

I don't know anything about Aivoturso, though he's apparently the inexperienced player on the team. These guys may need a bit of extra lurker help too.

Quote:2. Team Blame Caledorn - YossarianLives / Caledorn (with Scooter and Old Harry dedlurking)

I think if Scooter and Old Harry take an active role, this team might be the one to beat. They are veterans of a number of MP games on this site. Scooter is extremely good at diplo.

Quote:3. [Waiting for teammate's approval to post the name] - Slaze / Maga_R (with Jovan Kukic dedlurking)

I only know Slaze through inheriting an impossible situation in PB2 and making a fantastic and tenacious defense out of it, getting far more than he ought to have. Of course the level of play wasn't very high in that game, other than Sullla's team. Also this was before being on the wrong end of maybe the most epic backstab ever done here by Athlete4life. lol

Not sure how I missed Scooter and Old Harry dedlurking... it was even in my quote. Huh. In any event I agree that they'll add a lot to the team if they get seriously involved.

I've seen him around in a few games, including in one of the CFC MTDG's. Actually I haven't come across a game where he isn't subbing for someone in a bad situation, so it'll be interesting to see how he handles a game where he's holding the reigns from the beginning.

EDIT: Here's one. Spoiler alert - he won. tongue

Quote:2. Team Blame Caledorn - YossarianLives / Caledorn (with Scooter and Old Harry dedlurking)

Caledorn is approx on my level ingame. He is also a RL friend and the one that tipped me towards CivFanatics. Cale is good with diplo, but is just average at game mechanics and playing. Yossarian is extremely good at game mechanics and recovering intel based on scores. i think this team is a dangerous, since they got good lurkers and will most likely gather lots of info, bending diplo towards their will.

Quote:3. [Waiting for teammate's approval to post the name] - Slaze / Maga_R (with Jovan Kukic dedlurking)

Slaze is a great opponent and is doing great in our Pitboss @ CFC. I had not too many opportunities to exchange words, but I see that people got lots about Slaze already.

About Maga: It's a woman! I can't remember i've seen Maga playing a full game yet, but I know that she is doing great subbing after ... someone (I really can't remember). Slaze is definitly the guy who will control that game.

I look at your describing of Bowsling and can out of this say that Aivo is his exact opposite, based on his last Pitboss. This mean they may either listen to eachother and make a great team. Aivo is actually a good talk, so i hope he will be in charge of diplo.

Heh... Except he is partially ruude and usually play a bad game, i have nothing more to say. If I am not wrong he is a RL friend of 2metraninja. I don't know if that means anything, but i may suspect that we may see 2metra as dedlurker on this team

I don't remember the exact year, but I think that I started playing civ4:col when I was 9. I later picked up the original civ4 and failed horribly at it due to trying to play it as if it was colonisation. After arriving at this site via sullla (when I was about 12), I picked up BTS and played a few more games, but decided that I was hopeless and went back to other games. So yes, I have been playing for a while, but not recently. smile

Oops! lol Usually you're fairly safe assuming someone involved with Civ4 Pitboss is a guy... we do have rather a gender imbalance around these parts. In fact the only other female in Pitboss I'm aware of was LiPing from the Pitboss 2 game (which I wasn't involved with). I've played on Gamespy with a couple of female friends of DanQ, and I've played a lot of LAN with my girlfriend... but Pitboss seems to be a male dominated land. So this will be the first time ever that I will have (knowingly) played a Pitboss game with a female involved. Neat. smile

Okay, good to know. It could be that my opinion of Bowsling is inaccurate - it's only based on one game, and as he didn't start near me I could only judge his expansion rate by score. Could have been that his particular geography and neighbours backed him into a corner, I'm not sure. In any event, if Aivo's into the military side of things they could make a good team together.

I kind of wondered about the personality of someone who chooses the forum name "Dick" (assuming his name isn't Richard). If 2metraninja is dedlurking him that will be interesting - I've played multiple games with 2metra and we have a bit of a history. He's a moderately skilled player... not too much to worry about 1 on 1, but he can be somewhat dominating in the diplo scene which can make him a bit scary.
