fyi, if you are able to log out of the game and log back in when you do this to yourself, the diplo screen should be gone next time (note: only when you do that to yourself, not when someone has sent you a diplo offer).

I'd have to test that to see if pressing ESC still brings up the menu to log out. The other solution is to just unpause when I log in next time and not worry about conserving so much clock.

I don't think you can get the menu when stuck in diplo, but you can exit out of civ using the red X or by killing it with CTRL+ALT+DEL. You don't want to do this if anyone else is also logged into the game though.

the latter is how I did it, by ending task. for those late night turns when everyone else is asleep . If someone else was in game, then getting the game unpaused probably is not an issue

Yeah...I didn't want to end the process, which was why I asked for help. It worked out.
