random events like that do suck haphazard. They do balance out somewhat over time though; I had one playing as castille in fact yesterday where i was just given about 400 ducats. The way I justify random good or bad happening in long stretches is that like in real life either tons of good things or tons of bad things liked to happen at the same time.
Also minor spoiler for Castille if people have Aragon issues:
There's an event that might trigger between 1450 and 1550 that will put aragon under a personal union with you similar to how history went. I won't give away the conditions (I was accidentally spoiled to them myself), but it's somewhat likely, and if it triggers I think it would help make castille a lot easier.
So I found a collection of videos listed here that cover just about every basic area of EU4, and how they all interact with each other. The video on each subject is 2-6 minutes (minus the tutorial, which should be unnecessary), and from the 15 or so I've watched so far seem to be very well done. I'd recommend looking in the list for any mechanics you feel you have deficient knowledge about, or all off them if you just wanna make sure you've covered all the bases.

I'm playing as Brandenburg and have seen 5 comets in 35 years of play.
This game is a ball! It's better than EU3 in almost every way. I got my ass handed to me by some rebels when I played an MP game as Portugal. My SP game as Sweden is boring (the stupid Danish king won't die), although the new fleet basing rights are allowing me to start exploring already (in like 14something).
Well definitely learnt a lesson in letting AI negotiate on your behalf for a war. Joined an ally in defense and was starting to win the war. At first they were losing bad but when I arrived I started taking back territory quickly. Then the war ended suddenly and I'm thinking "Well that sucks, I should have negotiated earlier and gotten the couple territories I wanted near me". I didn't pay attention though. Seems that during negotiations, and I'm only assuming it's this because it's the only way I could see it happening, they ceded two of my provinces to an old enemy who wasn't even part of the war

I never check that button.
Enemy cores can always be ceded, so if you're holding someone else's cores checking that button imperils those provinces.
What does everyone think is the most generally useful monarch power point? I'm learning heavily towards ADM for Europeans at least.
ADM followed by MIL. Having a 6-skill ruler in either category leads to a pretty solid advantage, with MIL it has more to do with how little there is to spend it on, so with a 6-skill MIL you generally keep up in tech and rack up several ideas per tech as well. ADM is just way overused. Stability, tech, ideas, cores...in fact, I'd say it's best not to take an Idea Group that uses ADM till one of your last slots, even though Innovative and Economic are pretty good, you'll rarely have the points to spend on Ideas if you are steadily expanding. Unless you play as a colonial nation or bullshit Austria with it's infinite vassal/PU missions. The game is significantly casualized from EU3, personally adding the monarch power points on top of the sliders would have been alright since Magistrates were clunky garbage, but completely abolishing the sliders was a dumb move. Every nation feels like it plays the same now honestly. Not to mention the hilarity that the HRE has become. Blobbing and wars everywhere. I think playing Magna Mundi for too many years must have spoiled me, as is, it feels almost like a painting simulator given how easy expansion is.
Any chance that someone could take a walk through the game with a handful of screens? ... considering buying it but my only experience in Grand strategy is CKII and I'm totally lost from looking through the demo

Did you hit the tutorial on the demo? It'd be a fun project to take on, but for all the other things on my plate. :P

You mean Paradox have made a game where the Tutorial aren't a pile of steaming dung? ... aren't that against internal company by-laws?
