I'm pretty new to Civ IV - less than 100 hours under my belt so far - and my only exposure to multiplayer and SG has been reading Pitboss and SG reports.

I'm pretty keen to learn how to play better and I think the best way to do that would be a 3 person succession game, perhaps with one experienced player and a couple newer players trading turns off, making fun mistakes, making dumb mistakes, learning from them and hopefully coming out the other side a bit wiser.

I was thinking of playing a game on Noble or maybe Prince, perhaps some more experienced players can chime in as to the difficulty level.

Given the aim of the game, some variants are probably not a great idea.

A simple continents or pangea Ancient/Standard game would seem to be the best way to go.

Any thoughts?

Regarding difficulty I would suggest pitching it between your current single player level, and two levels above it. For a succession game you will find yourself well able to handle levels above your personal games, due to a) having more time per turn, b) the general idea of posting plans and turn reports focusing your play, and c) the feedback and ideas from other players.

I would suggest at least four players in the succession game, because in a three player game if one person drops out the game will likely die before a replacement can be found.

The most important rule with any succession game is the 24/48 hour rule, 24 hours from posting of the last player's save to claim your save and sketch a plan and 48 hours to play, report and post the save for the next player. This keeps the game moving at a nice clip (keeping interest high) and allows for all players to properly follow and analyse the game.

I'd be happy to play in one, though my BtS skills are rusty through lack of use (I've almost exclusively been playing EitB of FfH the last two years), though I can still comfortably beat noble.

Well, I'm going to start up registration, I've explored the interest and it is certainly there! We'll see where we go from here!
