As we talk about conceding, yeah, Azza doens't have Rifles. Or Steel.
I got military science and showed a ship of the line to Fintourist, he responded by retreating his fleet.

My problem was I hadn't developed my economy anywhere near enough to be able to beeline Rifles. I'd gone Astronomy to try and claim the intercontinental islands, and needed Gunpowder so I could defend against Fintourist's Jannisseries. From there, Chemistry -> Mil Sci was a much quicker, safer way to defend myself against imminent Rifles (I could see Fintourist's research).

That makes more sense. Hope you're not too offended by that . I was sort of running on the assumption that you had pumped out a bunch of cities and were just in the process of gearing up as those cities finished their courthouses etc. So I guess I was overestimating your GNP capacity as well.

That was the plan, but early game I didn't have the worker support to get the cottages up, and then probably overwhipped to prevent them from developing.
No offense taken, because I'm well aware I'm not the greatest at this game (to say the least), and I can only assume this game would've been immensely frustrating for you after Fintourist's attack.

Thank you Sareln for the game! Before my boating attack succeeded, this game really looked like becoming a tough race between us and who knows what would have happened. I really think that you leveraged EXP&IMP well and built a strong economy.
I felt kind of forced to attack you also because my other neighbor, Azza, was expanding way faster than Viqsi and Hydra, which ment that you would have had a lot more room peaceful room to expand. (At that time I did not know that there were that many astronomy-required-islands available).

Damn that gold made me first wonder about your huge early GNP (I thought I had a high commerce and I was Financial..!) and later just jealous.

So you had started to build it and my paranoia was not completely unnecessary! Only mostly..
Btw, 1-turning the GLH was a fine piece of work.

Maintaining open borders with you after everybody had already opened them was a continuous Prisoners Dilemma for me. During my attack they of course ended up helping me and were valuable.

I think this was probably my strongest economical play during this game and really helped me to win Liberalism & Music artist. Okay, State Property workshops and drafting were later great as well..

Aiming to Lib Nationalism and then backfill while drafting for defense and building Taj Mahal and following that with my 2 person golden age to get to rifles and astronomy/chemistry boats in front of Fintourist, then kill him (neighbor + rival -> other neighbor unlikely to intervene and his neighbor (azza) likely to jump on him as well).
I think this was a realistic scenario, or at least we would have dragged each other down and someone else would have mopped us.. Luckily I did not gamble too much with Liberalism and my lead held despite your crazy tech push.
I also wonder that you did not go for Nationalism after our lib race ended. With IND bonus you could have still won the race to Taj.
Okay, I managed until T122.. I'll save the rest for later

Hmm.. I think I always thought that you could bulb Liberalism somehow, but now I realize that the fact that Alphabet enables PP is a problem..

As you can read from my thread, I could have squeezed it in 1 turn earlier, but yeah, it was a close race. Diverting to Music almost cost me Lib, which of course was the 1st priority..
I think I have said it already elsewhere, but having research visibility on you was huge and really enabled me to control those races.

In hindsight this move really was the game decider - which from the lurker perspective is probably a real pity. This game could have easily developed into a massive industrial world war with us burning endless amounts of hammers until there were again 5 contenders..
To be continued...

(July 1st, 2013, 23:33)Sareln Wrote: Question for Fintourist at End of Game: why hit BaII instead of Azza at this juncture? You've got Janissaries and Azza has just gotten to Gunpowder so you can push his army around right now to cut him down to a more manageable number of cities. BaII can't really touch you. Odds on if you beat Azza even in a limited manner, you can probably get a concession from BaII and Viqsi. But even with a successful war against BaII, you've got to fight Azza to secure the win, and it's not clear that you'll get a better matchup than Janissaries vs. few rifles and macemen rather than either janissaries v. muskets or rifles v. redcoats. Just my 2 cents at this point.
There were at least couple of reasons why I chose to attack BaII: - I had a reasonable amount of troops coming from my attack against you. It was logistically a lot easier to go after BaII instead of Azza.
- At that time my lead was significant, but not so big that I could have won e.g. a 4v1 dogpile. BaII was clearly the easiest target for landgrab and I liked the idea of adding a handful of cities into my empire and increasing my production edge
- Azza had the biggest military of my opponents. You never know what happens with warfare and I thought that there was a relevant chance that my attack is not effective enough, just weakens us both and the game just continues and continues...

Goal is to burn Fintourist's holdings between me and BaII, because I can, using frigates to bring the defenses down in the cities and even / minor disadvantage odd battles and overwhelming numbers.
If I had not manage to end the war against BaII, this attack would have created a lot more problems. Luckily you did not manage to combine your units into one stack and I already had some of my troops coming back from BaII front.. If you had attacked 2-3 turns earlier you would have probably razed at least a city or two.
