On with defense. I keep up the xbow manufacture in Lesson. Learning is soon finished with a spearman. Worker set to chop two places at once, both bordertiles that are possible to lose to culture.

I gotta discourage a sneaky end-around galley, check out pitboss 8 for some naval sneakery between Commodore and ScooPin: sneaking is pretty ineffective except when commodore had a 4-move galley. defensive units can cover a 2-move galley too easily.
also, xbows are cool, but the age of melee is coming to an end. longbows are going to be your best defenders (esp against mounted, which seems to be suttree's flavor. build a couple xbows, but focus on longbows.

Sneaky no-no. Got it. Longbows coming to the fore now. ** Kuro Minus 46**
F4 screen. Kuro still under siege by WilliamLP. But Kuro has had an extreme adjustment of his military. Upgrading a lot of units perhaps?
The Demo is not a pretty sight for me.

Kuro's power went up?? Well at least he's sacrificing growth for power, that's good for your long term Kuro Kount.

Kuro lost a city to WilliamLP. **Kuro Minus 24**
Powercurve, possibly a dip coming on for Kuro depending on the size of army he had in the lost city.
xbow ready in lesson next turn. workers have 2 turns to chop towards forge and longbow.

**Kuro minus 10** and counting... but his powercurve is way up. Much higher than anticipated. Most likely the settlement lost was a low-end one. His graph does not indicate a loss of army.
I finished a xbow and a spear, now on for longbow/longbow/forge/forge. At some point it will make less sense to build defenders, but I'm not quite there yet.
In the interest of good sportsmanship, what can I actually do when considering retaking one of my former settlements? I assume 'scorched earth' is as far from what is good sport as it is possible to get? Meaning that if by some miracle I manage to take Knoxville, would razing it to keep it out of enemy hands be considered griefing/jerk moving? TBH, if I take it, my army will most likely be smithereens. Thus making me a mop-up target of convenience for other players. Yes, yes, this is rather defeatist thinking but I am just keeping an eye on what my actual options are. I can survive for quite some time if my neighbours are busy with eachother.

It depends how much culture you still have in the place - you won't be allowed to raze it if you're over a certain percentage.
Scorched earth is fine - but if you aren't going to gain from the maneuver it might not be wise. If that gain is just keeping it from Suttree how much is that worth to you?
How far would the borders pop back if you did take it (ie how much of the bfc have you still got the majority of culture in?)

Ok, the past few turns have been taken without much updating on my part, and boy have things heated up. BGN attacked last turn, taking Learning and Thesis. He has several stacks totalling 21+ Cataphracts (str12 mind you), 5 axe, 2 catapults, 2 chariots(why not upgrade these to cataphracts yet? money?) and not looking like he intends to stop.
In reply, I have used the money saved up the past twenty turns to upgrade archers to longbowmen and upgrading them to the best of available defender stats (best stat is str 6 +145% defense in the capital)
As for **Kuro minus 24** I have to assume that this is one goal I may not reach.
There are two workers undefended in the field, is it bad sportmanship to delete these rather than "gifting" them by letting them stand there?
Also, I have sent the flying russian to raze a fishing tile in BGN territory.
