It was just a dance…
There was no harm in it, not really, it was just for the sport, because there was nothing else to do where we grew up. Betty started it, perhaps two months back. She said she’d seen Tituba – you know Tituba, our slave – down there when service was on.
Always during service, mind, so we couldn’t do anything about it, but one day Uncle Parris called a meeting, so we followed her. Nothing wrong with that, we just wanted to see if she would help us with the mopping, y’know.
So we followed her into the forest, along a track I hadn’t see before. We stayed back at first, didn’t want her to see us, but we started to get closer as the tall, dark pines seemed to twist over us, like a tunnel that wrapped us ever tighter…I got a bit scared and made us go closer, but Betty didn’t seem to care.
We were getting really close to Titty when the forest opened to a clearing, with a fire crackling at its centre, and a black man standing over it. Before she could enter he said something I didn’t understand, a sort of rasping snarl, but Titty must’ve understood it because she stopped suddenly and turned to us, shocked.
“Girls, you should go home. You shouldn’t be here.” Her voice sounded oddly strained, but there was a power to her that I hadn’t heard before. I wanted to leave then, just let them get on with it, but Betty piped up, “We heard you were dancin’ in the forest, and we don’t have nothing to do ‘till evening prayers so…”
Tituba took our hands and led us into the clearing. “So you’d like to come and dance with me and my friends? You want that?” There was a hint of sadness, or perhaps resignation to her voice, but an alluring air to it now.
I looked at Betty then, willing her to stop, to get us out of this, but I dared not speak. Her eyes burned with excitement, “Yes!” The black man began to laugh, a low guttural sound that seemed to reverberate in my skull, and suddenly it was echoed by dozens of voices, as all around us shrouded figures emerged capering from the darkness.
Titty laughed too, a gay and in that moment Betty seemed to realise something might be wrong, but she was already dancing. I stood apart for a moment, sickened, then Betty seized my hand and pulled me into the fray.
They say a lot about it now, but what they don’t say is we went to her. The black man will take you in, teach you the dance, pass you the blood sacrament, but they will not make you take it. We chose the horror we unleashed.
Sometimes a dance is more then just a dance…sometimes a dance can burn the world down.

Game Details
- Flavor will be centered around the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, with everyone receiving an appropriate name. Names are public and are for role-playing purposes only. This will be a two faction game, with villagers and witches as the majority and minority respectively. Depending on balance, a Serial Killer, Traitor or Survivor may be included, but no other major anti-town faction. Standard winning conditions will apply (village wins with all wolves dead, wolves win with equal players or when there is no way the village can prevent this).
- This game will be a majority lynch game, with a minimum 24 hours before lynches may occur, and a maximum 72 hours, after which a normal lynch will occur (ties will be broken randomly). Majority is defined as 50% of the players plus one (so 11 in a 20 player game, or 9 in a 17 player game).
- I will post results when I am next online, or get someone to do so on my behalf. As soon as this majority is reached, however, the player is counted as dead and the day finished, so no posting should occur until results are published. Nights last 24 hours from the publication of results.
- Abilities that effect votes will not be applied to vote counts until after the (72 hr) deadline. Any effects placed onto the majority lynched will be posted at the start of the day (for example, "9 votes required to lynch. T-hawk requires 8 votes and Krill requires 10 votes.")
- This game will be an open setup, with all possible roles will be defined and explained in the first post of the thread. However, not all roles on this list will be used in the actual game, and less then 75% of players will receive a role (likely much less, but I want players to meta as they see fit). Roles will be assigned randomly, by an outside source if there are any concerns. There may be repeats of roles. I reserve the right to include one secret role.
- The sample village role pm will be placed in the first post. Please do not try to manipulate this, or any other GM oversight, to clear yourself (any issues should be PM'd to me for resolution).
- Full role description will be provided on death unless it would give spoilers.
- Quoting from quicktopics or PMs is not allowed. You may summarize, but no quoting, unless specified otherwise.
- I have a setup currently involving 20 players, and I will alter this according to how many choose to play.
- Signups will be open until 2200GMT, November 20th. I will start the game 24 hours later.
- The game setup is not yet finalized, so if anyone knows they don't want to play and would like to discuss the setup, PM me as I would welcome any input.
