Graz was founded! I'm going to risk it and go for a cargo ship first.
Hey, I'm no longer last in every category!

Found a main land city state, too bad it's between Azza and Jkaen
City screen confirms that there is at least one barb galley or trireme just next to us in the fog. I changed the build in Graz to a trireme to clear the waters.

Settler finished. I started a library next. A shrine would only get me the pantheon 3 turns earlier. Sure it also gives +1 faith permanently, but in this situation I have to pick and choose my buildings to not go broke. +1 faith for -1 GPT is not a good trade right now, though I needed the initial shrine in Salzburg to get the ball rolling. I've been pre-roading to the fourth city spot, which lets my settler found the city two turns faster, but I might be regretting it when I run out of money :P I was really lucky to get three gold generating luxuries in my capital, else this would be game over because I have no-one to trade with for a long time.

Any gold deficit greater than your remaining treasury just gets subtracted from your beaker production instead. The game talks about units going on strike but I've never seen that happen; my guess is the mechanic either never existed or was patched out early.

Yeah it's not the end of the world, but it's not a good place to be either. At least with research chugging along at a normal pace you'll eventually reach techs like Currency and Guilds which will help out. It can be hard to make a comeback if you crash your economy. It's possible though, check out the test game from page 1 where I dropped to 0 research at one point.
He's got two mainland city states right next to him, I've got none anywhere ![lol lol](https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/images/smilies/lol.gif)
And there is Uluru as I predicted. CS sometimes act strangely when you are trying to steal good tiles from them. I've had them mass buy tiles during my turn after I settle a city close to them.
Notice Azza's new city on the top left corner.
Linz was founded. I'm the first to four cities I think.

Got Philosophy. Happiness and gold are what I need right now, so here's the next four techs:
I could also potentially burn my Great Engineer on one of the Theology wonders if they are still up by the time my GE is born.
Or if I want two GE's, I can take one when finishing the liberty tree.
Running low on happiness, but I'll get +3 from social policies in 5T and +4 from connecting dyes some time later.
Would be nice to meet Meiz soon, he might have luxuries to trade with me.
I think I'll postpone on settling the furs city, at least a little bit. If I wait too long, workers will run out of things to do.
Vienna finished the library. I veto'ed the settler, so going for Stonehenge instead. Even if I don't get it, the fail gold is nice in this situation.
Salzburg finished the chariot archer. It's going to build a circus and a library next.

No hidden city states in the north, though there was Lake Victoria. I'll gladly take the +1 happiness for discovering it
I sent the trireme to check out the south first, since it would take a while to build a cargo ship after it. No city states there either.
Meiz is also still missing, I suppose he has to be south between Azza and Jkaen.
Not sure whether I should go for Construction or Currency first. I somehow managed to end the turn while choosing a tech, so I'll roll with whatever it ended up being

Got my pantheon, chose Stone Circles. Up to +7 faith per turn now, and +12 once Stonehenge is complete in 3T.
Got the happiness bonus from liberty tree. I have Salzburg at full food box but limit growth enabled. It doesn't have any good tiles to grow onto. Is this smart play? Who the hell knows.
Another city state. How is this even remotely fair? Map balance sucks, there, I said it

Yeah, why limit Salzburg? The additional pop gives at least the beaker and gold if it has a trade route. I only avoid growth if the happy cap is really tight (5 isn't unless you're about to found a city) and another city has a better tile to allocate from that happy slot.

Hmm. I was barely getting by before that turn, but got extra happiness from liberty tree and from finding a natural wonder. I'm intending to settle the furs city in the north soon, probably straight after Stonehenge. The other cities need the population more than Salzburg: the two small cities need to grow, and the capital has unoccupied production and gold tiles to work.
Yet I'm still going to let it grow now :P I think I can just starve it back to size 5 at will if I need happiness. I also made another adjustment: I removed the extra farm to instead gain +1 hammer from an unemployed citizen specialist. Next turn I should have an extra beaker from +1 pop, an extra gold per turn from trade routes, and another extra hammer from a new unemployed citizen specialist (city eats 2 more food per turn, so I will go down from +3 to +1 food per turn, still non-negative).
