[Tech Thread] For Tech Thread Threads of Tech

This is the IT and Tech Issues Thread for RBP19, the newest 'vanilla' pitboss game here at Realms Beyond.

The game is now live. If this is your first time connecting please read this entire post carefully. Text in Red will be of interest to veterans.

Access the game via DirectIP connection to sunrise089.dyndns.org:2061. No password is needed (nor will one permit a successful connection) when connecting to the game. Make 100% sure there are no spaces in the field or you'll get an error. Spaces love to crop up unexpectedly, so please double-check this before posting that you can't connect.

The first time a player logs into the game they will be asked to set and confirm a password. This is non-trivial to change, so please make sure you know what it is, can remember it, etc.

In-game you can play as normal. This game is played via simultaneous turns, so you can queue unit actions and builds like normal, even after you end turn. I get asked sometimes, so I'll note you press TAB to chat in-game. When you're done playing please log out via Exit to Main Menu, not Exit to Desktop (which can create connectivity/lag issues).

I have set a 48 hour timer per team for the first turn. Starting next turn the timer will switch to 24 in-game hours. Of course in the future the timer can be tweaked according to the wishes of the players.

This game uses Civstats to track the turns and other info. This game is here. If you want to register via Civstats and claim your civ the password for each civ is "sirian."

From now on, please let me know if you have any technical concerns in this thread. I can be reached infrequently via forum PM, and easily via email at sunrise089 at gmail dot com and IM at sunrise089 on either AIM or GChat.

Give me a minute and I'll post a slightly easier to read idea of the way the picking would work so that we can hash it out.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

I've posted your starts in the map/lurker thread for broader review. When it looks like we're all set I'll post screenshots in your threads.

To the players, please post in this thread any number between 0 and 100, no duplicates. This will be used for my own nefarious purposes.

Ok, so the basic questions here are:

1. How do we resolve ties?
2. What constitutes a tie?
3. When/How do we allow duplicates?

Let's imagine a 5 player game with the following scenario:

Ok, if we're using the Boggle resolution method, which was the original intent any same pick on the same row is thrown out and we advance to the next row for those players. In that method, we get the following resolution:

Specifically, all the players in row 1 have a duplicate with some other player, so all of their choices are discarded. In row 2, Player 2, 4 and 5 have unique choices so they get them while Players 1 & 3 have a duplicate Civ so their choices are discarded. In row 3, the players who have already gotten a pairing are discarded and they are irrelevant, so Player 1 & 3 have no conflict here and get their choices.

If we use the Roll Ties resolution method, we get this scenario:

Here Xenu rolls players 1 and 2 for Pacal, which player 1 wins. Since nobody else chose Inca, he gets his choice. Player 3 gets Sury of India because player 2 has already been eliminated for this round and nobody else chose India. Player 4 and 5 then roll of Darius and player 4 wins, so he gets his choice.

In round 2, only player 2 and 5 need resolution. Unfortunately, with Pacal and HRE already chosen, neither get their choice and we move to round 3, where they each get their choice.

This scenario allows duplicates. For this reason, I think if we allow duplicates, we need to go with Boggle resolution method. If we don't allow duplicates until after "X" choice where "X" is later, I think we can do either resolution method.

63.

I have no preference on the picking method, mostly because I don't understand it at all, and am too busy studying electrostatics to feel like trying to understand it.
