Quote:Yeah, I feel like I'm playing on a knife-edge with Joao, and maybe we've just slipped off. Hopefully the golden age can get us back on track. I'm still going back and forth over whether it was a mistake to delay currency for so long. The nice thing about wealth-builds is that they always give you the option of recovering the economy but ideally you shouldn't need to use them.
Actualy i discoverd lately that you can play a new diferent civ counting on building wealth, and is very strong you can copmete for a very long time with others and if there is no tech bonus you can even turn in a win. So building wealth is realy strong , if you dont use it something missing from your play. I will detaliate sometimes why if i find the time.

I'd love to read it.
For me, I try to only use wealth builds to shave those last few beakers off a tech and get it a turn earlier, or when I need to get a key tech quickly.
I've set up the golden age for T98, Thoth might think he's getting the better deal out of the wine for ivory trade, but we'll show him. This little city is doing it's stuff nicely:
It won't leave size 8 stagnation for a long time so I'm giving it's food surplus away to some cities who are scraping the barrel to get enough food in time. It's also makes a tidy amount of gold and hammers in this configuration.
I hope the GNP is just people turning tech on rather than a real increase. We're currently making 32gpt. I'll be very interested to read the other's threads after the game and see how they're getting on in the GNP, given their cities are all a lot smaller than ours(we have almost 25% of the world's pop) but they have almost the same number. Well, Gaspar has Org, Thoth the next best happy cap+ikhandas, dtay the GLH, Commodore the smallest city count+Colossus+shrine, ok guess I'm just wondering about Oxy.

I just noticed Gaspar has alphabet, guess that's how they're teching. They have Maths too though, so I guess they just bulbed it. I don't know, it should help them get to currency a lot quicker, both through build research and the extra pre-req, but once there it doesn't help them. I suppose it opens up better bulb paths too. I like my bulb maths idea while saving gold for currency better. Obviously they have more info about their own civ though.
Thoth, Oxy and Gaspar have all turned on tech, so currency will probably fall soon.

Dtay landed the Mids and revolted to Representation. So, GLH, Mids and he's doing pretty well in city count. Should we close borders with him? I still don't think so, he doesn't neighbour us and he's still behind the field, so I'd prefer to help him catch up and pressure people who do neighbour us.
Regarding us, we got our Prophet this turn, on 88 pop now, will be 97 in 2t I think. I guess that's worth the delay. I'm sort of hoping those 3 with tech on land currency soon, that extra pre-req bonus would be nice. I think we'll probably ignore Feudalism, not sure we could make it anyway. Instead we'll grab the two most important techs as fast as possible; Currency and CoL. Currency will be worth 30gpt at least and we can whip in markets and courthouses after the GA.
I settled the ex-barb city in the south btw, cost us 11gpt! We definitely need something to build that is not settlers. I think it's pretty clear that going for Monotheism was a mistake, we could have grabbed it at the tail end of the GA. Either CoL or Writing and Maths would have been better. In retrospect, spending valuable beakers on something that could be done with hammers was very silly. I'm reasonably happy with the Monarchy choice though, we got 2 happiness out of it and I'm growing a few cities into unhappiness on the GA turn, which will go away thanks to HR. This GA wouldn't be nearly as valuable without it.

Threw the GA:
Nothing especially interesting for GA I'm afraid though. Here's the best two cities:
The Capital will retake it's wheat for good now I think. We're going to put up multipliers finally, so it's pop will be more valuable than elsewhere.
Oxy got currency btw, he was making 39gpt at what I think was max tax. Not that impressive when you consider he just got about 2/3 of that from currency. It's up in the 50s now IIRC, but I assume that is gold building. He's paying us 6gpt for a gold resource now though. Btw, I know I was complaining a bit about the differences in land quality earlier in the game, but it looks like we've had access to more earlier luxuries than some of the others. Thanks Xenu!

Settled True Grit our future HE city:
I've had hammers in military units in a couple of queues, which I'm now allowing to complete since I think we can afford them. I'm going to congregate most of our excess power around True Grit around T105, IIRC, looking at 7 axes, 2 spears and 3 chariots. I doubt Gaspar can stop that taking Hyperborea, which should grow to size 2 soon.
Hopefully this won't provoke a bigger war, there's a big gap between Hyperborea and his next city and our other border is the chokepoint by Hondo, he might pillage our wheat there but I can't see him making further gains.

Hey Becko, fancy another turn at the wheel?
I'm away again Tuesday to Thursday this week, I was hopeful I'd figure out a method of playing but it's looking more unlikely now. Should be the last time for a while hopefully.

Ok, looks like 2 turns of 60% research will give us Currency, which we have the gold for. I've set research to 20% and we go 100% next turn since a Library completes at The Searchers. I'm working slightly commerce centric tiles to make that happen, probably unnecessary given growth next turn, but just in case.
Commodore and Thoth(~50gpt again) have joined Oxy in the knowledge of currency. Wyngas went for Calendar instead and they've a city with a big sabotage production cost, must be building MoM.
I'm assuming I'll get the next turn at least, but I've left signs for worker turns for the next 4t.
MoM's missionary goes toward The Searchers, overflow into another for Texas Terror. The Searchers will complete the axe in the build queue after the Library. After that we're into currency, apart from texas terror, all cities should probably build a market. Just build gold in Texas Terror.
I'll show where these two settlers are going in a minute. TC goes Temple -> hire another priest -> market. LT goes for another axe or build gold I suppose. I don't think we want a market there since it's giving most of it's cottages away long term. Seabee goes into a LH.
Here's the 2 city sites, closing off the border with Thoth. Fort Apache is on avoid growth this turn and needs to be turned off. Just grow on the lighthouse. Hondo's LH will be chopped next turn, moving to a market afterwards. Westward Ho should probably hold the axe almost complete and build wealth till T105, then complete the axe and start another. Don't want to spook the Ottomans. Side Note: All 3 sites could use some missionaries.
One chariot should head over to defog the city site. Everything else should head to the hill for T105. Keep 2 axes and a spear there beforehand. True Grit should grow on an axe. 3 Texas Steers should build another axe too. TQM switch from Lib -> market probably. The Sea Chase continue growing on Moai. McLintock finishes a WB next turn(if that doesn't waste overflow, can't remember) and gets a Buddhism spread. Probably go for Missionaries then, maybe another axe if necessary. It will want a market eventually, but not immediately.
Researching CoL after Currency. Rather uninformative demos:

Uninformative except for the whole 1st-in-everything bit, that is.
I'm on a roadtrip ATM, celebrating ancient Norse rites, as is the custom in my native country. Oh, and watching three football games a day. I'll be back and able to pick up a turn or two tomorrow evening.
