Turn 088

Micro quiz!

Do you whip the granary this turn or next? It's closer than you think

[Image: pb18%20-%20turn088%20-%20llancarfan.JPG]

Trick Question! You chop it out of course. Except I don't have any workers available this far east.

Answer:
Yeah, you whip it. It gains 3 food and loses 2 commerce over not

Look at all the granaries!!!!!

My second sword finished at Willow Creek this turn. I spent a long time deciding between a settler for the ivory/rice in the south or another worker (currently at 8 with 9 cities); definitely don't need more swordsmen. Decided on the worker.

I'm also chopping a galley out of Tyr, so I can use my sentry chariot to map out WilliamLP when I get open borders with him (fingers crossed he accepts). I'm considering putting those 2 swords I have built on that galley afterwards and heading east to see what I can see.

Yes, i double-turned Barry. It was either that or we pause for half a day, and I'm not moving against him this turn or next.

Turn 090

Ho-hum, another turn of infrastructure. Chopped in the library at Scales, popped borders at Strand. Grow, grow, grow.

I envy the people who got to be my size and didn't have to whip out an army to do it. People like Cyneheard, dtay, Fintourist, WilliamLP ... heh, that's about everyone not attacked early. (Azza, you have the worst luck).

Did some napkin math and found that I'm 13g shy of getting Alphabet in 4t. So likely we get it in 5 unless I have a lot of growth onto commerce tiles really soon. I don't think it's worth mass-assigning tiles to coast to get, so probably Alphabet in 5.

After that? Masonry! Operation Under-Appreciated Wonders will soon be Under-Way!

Azza kind of makes his own luck...

Turn 091

It's always fun to see how the dominos fall in a hugely complex game like this. For instance, if Barry hadn't been a jerk and settled up on me, and instead settled all this lush land in his east...

...then dtay wouldn't be getting this land now. (Seriously; how do you NOT settle the Sheep/Horse/Fish/Clam spot???)
Dtay is the big winner in my war against Barry. He's at 14 cities, hugely ahead of everyone. I'm pretty sure he's just been able to sandbox away, and you can already see how he is on my landmass from the cultural borders. And there's still a good chunk of land to settle out there. Now I'm wondering why Barry thought he had to settle up on me like we were playing a duel. (And "wondering" is probably the kind word for what I'm thinking...)

I will try to rush some settlers out here next, but that may be too slow. It is so far from my capital, and the settler I have finishing in 3 turns is already slated for getting the marble. (Do I reroute? I'm not sure it's worth that; I'm counting on that marble for my next play, but maybe a shrine isn't worth missing out on all that.)

I'll have graphs on dtay in a turn or 2. Then we'll figure out what our plan is over there. I'd like to get some kind of buffer to my holy city at least. But other options could be swords on galleys, CKNs down the line... We can't wait too long because he's far and away a stronger economy. Or maybe I just need to eat Cyneheard and try to blob up bigger.

I think I can get Alphabet in 3 without too much disruption. The capital hired a second scientist, and I am working 1 coastal tile. But still, I think that will be worth it. I've chopped out my galley from Tyr this turn, and I have my sentry chariot ready to load and get open borders going with WilliamLP.

Next Techs will be Masonry and Poly, then either Currency or Metal Casting.

But here's an idea of just how far behind I am

Oh well, it was just a game for lulz anyway with 33 players. Can't let that competitive side of me get the better of having fun

Turn 092

This was a pleasant turn smile

I opened the turn to the OB offer and after thinking on it for a while, decided that if it didn't work and I didn't get additional trade routes then I would just declare on FinTourist and call it a day. But instead I gained 18 additional commerce for free. Breakeven is now at 40%! Scientists were fired, research was changed, and I microed settlers and workers to come up a turn earlier since i didn't need to push for Alphabet hard any longer.

Now it's on to Masonry!

I'm hoping that nobody is building ToA. My goal is to build it in a high-food, high-production location that needs additional culture. I have a couple of meh options, but no one city really stands out. Places like Tyr can use the culture and will have plenty of food to add specialists later if I end up making that my NE city. Or Willow Creek is probably my best use of culture to secure a border with Cyneheard. But neither of those cities have religion and don't look to in the near future. For Great Person purposes, it seems like Llancarfan would be best - plus if we got the Great Prophet he'd be spawned in the city that needs the Shrine built. But Llancarfan is so underdeveloped it's going to whip a worker at size 4. I don't want to put it in the capital because I already have scientist GP points there.

There is one other city that could build it in, but that city has no forests to chop.

Also, I met Zanth.
Also, WilliamLP is going to kill MYKI.
And also, my galley chop seems kind of silly now that I have Open Borders and Foreign ICTRs in all my cities. So he'll scout some nearby cities and then head east.

Demos look good. Like, all categories look good. I'm not sure what to make of this. I'm not used to seeing demos like this

Huh, it looks like there is a known civ tech bonus for ancient era techs despite what the changelog says.

I have a higher GNP if I tech Polytheism than if I try to tech HBR.

Turn 093

Somebody just got Calendar eek

Cyneheard is sporting a health defense in his city to the east. Makes me glad I swapped to a spear in Tyr before i start my wonder. I decided it is going to be Tyr that attempt to build ToA in. The culture will be helpful to dominate the area, and the city can build it in a reasonable amount of time. ETA right now is turn 102, but if I can't finish Polytheism in 2 then that may delay the whole project a turn.

The real trick will be getting a religion into Tyr by t103 so I can start a temple 103, whip it 104, and hire a priest on 105. That would give us our first great person on turn 116 with odds approximately 26% merchant, 74% prophet. I'll probably bulb Currency if I lose the dice roll and it's a merchant at that point, because I envision going for Metal Casting after Priesthood.

For some reason the pic of what I wanted to show this turn didn't take, so instead here's a pic that did: my barren south. To be fair, I haven't shown it much, because there isn't much to see. This will be prime settling land once I get Calendar teched.

And then out east we got sight on dtay's city...

What's this? dtay's city is defended by a single axe?

If it was good enough to kill John Candy, hopefully it'll be good enough to kill him too.

Tech thread right now is a great reason why this game won't finish. Too many people just want to log in and play their turn and build their sandcastles and don't care about the other players or the game as a whole. Thank goodness we have Dhalphir to set us straight.

Game would have collapsed a month ago if not for Lord Parkin.
