Hiding Doctor Yellow Mist: 4 heads, one body

Making good progress on the southern continent. We've got 2/3 of the place, and the Luch remaining army is pretty much what's in this screenie, plus a lot of animals roaming around. We've only six units left over here, which may not be enough to finish them off, although our quality is such that I'm confident in holding what we've got. On the other hand, we're about to start getting cities out of revolt, at which point I ought to be able to cash-rush in some more Boarding Parties.

Or I could divert a boat from the northern front, also tempting. Won't need the units for very long, but it's going to take a while to kill our way through the Luch swarm without reinforcements.

In the north, I've been just capturing cities and not holding them, looking mainly to destroy military buildings like Sculptor's Studios by the double-capture. I can't figure out how to actually hold a city or destroy his stack, so I'm settling for causing attrition for now. I got surprised by this fleet, so I'm going to attempt to hold BeDazzler long enough to heal my ships and Boarding Parties.

I'm debating the best path forward over here. The Luch main problem is that their reaction force isn't really all that fast - mages and fireball-golems can do a lot of damage, but only in a 5-tile radius or so. So maybe I just need to start taking cities on both ends of their empire and make them pick which side to hold.

Alternately...their reaction force isn't super big, either. Dump 20 units in a city and I might just hold the place. Golems, at least, have to get within 2 tiles to counterattack, which is close enough for me to annilihate them afterward, probably. He's got the ability to hit me with full Maelstroms and maybe 10 summons, mixed fireballs and Ice Elementals.

I'm sending basically a full load on a Queen of the Line as reinforcements every turn, and don't expect that to stop until/unless I have to keep some back to defend against Amurites. That's nine units, typically mostly Str 9 Boarding parties with a Ritualist and Adept. Meanwhile I tend to lose 1-2 units, and kill a handfull of his. So the relative position keeps improving quite rapidly, even discounting the cities I'm taking. I should be able to figure out a way to crack open the main front sooner or later, with all these extra tools. Or if not me, then presumably my successor. At the very least I intend to give them the southern continent, a dominant fleet with tons of marines, and all the Luch coastal cities reduced to only things they can build with no infrastructure.

The luch killed my western stack frown. I was just running a bit too risky, I guess. On the other hand, that's a pretty small fraction of one turn's production, so it could be a lot worse.

In the south, first step was to use the arcane barges to kill the bears. Second step - I decided to take a risk. Rather than garrison the northern cities, I collected all the units into a Commando stack and went straight for his army. Reasoning? Well, two bits. First, staying spread out isn't really securing anything anyway, it's just risking defeat in detail. Second, with where his units are, I'm not actually sure he can reach the captured cities. Third, if he does, he's exposing his stack to fireballs from the Barges. But most importantly - he's got only one remaining production city down here. He's got a smidge of navy, which I will hopefully eradicate in a couple more turns. So the army I see is all there'll be. If I can eradicate it, then it doesn't matter if he takes back a city temporarily, the continent is mine.

Took out the golems and Priest of Leaves in the Luch SW city. My other Eidolon could only reach a bear. Some of the battles were as bad as 85% odds, but I won them all jive. So that makes 1 Iron Golem, 2 Wood Golems, a PoL, and three bears killed from this continent. He's got remaining one decent production city and 1 tiny one, to rebuild with - plus maybe one of his old cities if 2-movers + mud golems let him get a road to them. He's still got that well-promoted hunter, a well-promoted Fawn, and two mages running around, plus a handful of animals and warriors. I'm hoping that I can kill those two good units and the mages next turn, and then disperse to hunt down the remnants. My Eidolon is still full health, at ridiculous Str, so I don't expect to lose anything IBT. Maybe if he still had his fireball-throwers, I'd be worried.

After the results of this turn, I'm thinking I won't need any reinforcements down here. Just need to keep the Eidolons fighting - March/Commando/High Str is a really really nasty combo. It's going to get worse, as I gather the XP to put lots of Combat promos on them too.

I *will* want to pull them out and use them in the north, as soon as I can. That's a combo that will give me the best chance of sniping cultural control and actually hitting the Luch stack.

Still need to play the northern half and the logistics of the turn. I'm thinking I may take PotatoGlove; maybe also the city to the north of that. Or I may wait another turn or two for reinforcements.

Well..I should probably at least take both cities to burn down sculptor's studios. The bigger question is whether I attempt to hold them.

T185 part b)

Ended up doing this in the north. One BP in PotatoGlove, but a full Queen's load in Grassology. I think he can only reach with Kithra, one Iron Golem, this turn. And with Mobility/Haste available to me, and some cultural control, I can counterattack.

More reinforcements incoming, and I'll be able to see shortly how well this works. Might push outward from here, might not. Gotta see how the Luch react, and if culture adjusts any more than this. Really need those roads in neutral culture. Wish Savants could pop borders; might have to sacrifice a Ritualist and some time instead.

Still have no good answer for this continent, but maybe we can hold the edges and grind the Luch down with time.

T186:

I *think* this is a Mwahaha moment. DaveV spread out to recapture his cities, meaning I got to use every unit here. Arcane Barges killed 2 Fawns and a Tiger, the rest of my units got a two Mud Golems, Hunter, and Wood Golem. He's got left 1 Mage, three Mud Golems, a well-promoted Hunter, a warrior, and a Mage. 7 units to kill with my five + Arcane Barges. Plus whatever he builds. But man, Commando plus March is just unfair on an Eidolon, at least when there's no collateral around to even the odds. smile

The reason I'm not certain this is a win, is that I could swear he didn't have that many Fawns last turn. Maybe letting him have cities back means more units to kill in the long run. I'm still pretty confident, though, and his ability to counterattack is diminishing every turn.

In the north, he recaptured PotatoGlove and didn't try for Grassology - both pretty much as expected. He's got a significant stack in range to try for Grassology this turn, and I ended up deciding to see if I can take the punch. Pillaged the roads nearby, which might mean he's got to leave units in reach, maybe. If I'm lucky.

Dunno, we'll either regret this or find it awesome next turn.

T187-189

Sorry, Ellimist, but I don't think I'll be able to report the last two turns, and maybe not the next couple either.

DaveV ended up abandoning his southern continent holdings after T186. Took his Mage and Hunter and a couple odds and ends, and fled south. I guess he's hoping for a miracle - either the next player can surprise the next Lanun player, or the hunter can collect a swarm of animals, or something. Or just hoping to keep my Eidolons busy chasing.

So we now own all six cities, and in a couple turns when they come out of revolt, I'm going to pull the commandos out and trust self-production to hold the place.

We're still holding the one city on the north continent, and I'm still out of ideas up there. So I've just been dumping reinforcements in, and I trust the next player to come up with something useful for them to do. Well - I'm going to put a Temple of the Veil in, maybe a little cultural control will give us options.

Honestly, at this point, maybe it does make sense to go raze the everything, and resettle later. But I don't want to do that myself, in case one of the others has a better idea. Maybe we can get horses from somewhere and do this with chariots.

Two more turns and it's someone else's set! Yell0w, you still reluctant? Is it yours or HidingKneel's?

I'll take it.
8-12 = 11, so I'll take 192 through 202 (man, long game!)
