So, mayybe that galley doesn't mean anything. Maybe it's even Azza being paranoid about us. But just in case, I made sure Troubleshooter's finishing up an extra axe at EOT, and I stuck a horse archer in the city as well to go with its garrison archer.
And spread out the cats, so that we can guarantee at least two of them hitting any stack of his from Dental Plan. Need more everything - although longbows in the front cities would make me feel secure anyway.
Azza offered a ceasefire, which I took. His ship's stuck just north of Troubleshooter, so we've still got to garrison until we either bring up enough to kill it, or the borders pop again. Xenu offered Gold + Rice for Silver, which I declined...and then hooked up our own gold.
Azza asked for Open Borders to retrieve his galley. I debated a bit, and ended up deciding to accept. I stuck a chariot into his lands - hopefully we can get a decent picture of where his cities are before he cancels them again.
Feudalism is close, after which I think we need to turn tech off for long enough to upgrade at least a few archers to longbows. Then I think Poly-Monotheism for OrgRel, followed by heading toward Machinery. Crossbows would really obsolete his current axe/spear combination. Although we're going to continue building catapults, which also accomplish that trick.
I'm not quite torqued enough to say this in the tech thread, but I feel the need to rant.
Boldly, German, Dhalphir, etc: WHY THE F DID YOU SIGN UP FOR THIS GAME IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY PATIENCE? A MOMENT'S THOUGHT BEFOREHAND WOULD HAVE TOLD YOU THE PACE WOULD BE SLOW...IF EACH OF 30 PLAYERS NEEDS A TWO DAY PAUSE ONCE A SEASON, THE GAME IS PAUSED HALF THE TIME!
Sure, we all prefer a faster pace. That's why I try to get my turn in ASAP every time it rolls: I think usually I'm within 8 hours of the turn roll. Heck, that was half the reason to accept the ceasefire/open borders with Azza - to eliminate a turn split when apparently neither of us plans anything aggressive for the moment. But it's basic courtesy to let a player control their own civ.
I have currently no vacation plans for the whole rest of the year that would take me away from a civ computer. I also have a dedlurker (who was supposed to be a partner ) who could probably take the reins if my plans change. But I can still see a possible day when the turn-pace crowd pushes Parkin to take control: all it takes is something unexpected that keeps me offline for a whole weekend.
And, honestly, if that happens...I'm not sure I want the civ back. What's the point in having the duty of playing without the control to make it fun? Let Boldly have a single player game - or a duel with Parkin. Whatever.
I really hope that Krill's suggestion about people joining other games takes hold. Because if the turn pace martinets don't find a distraction, they're going to push people out of this game until it's small enough to have the pace they want. And then it'll be a farce. Heck, the farce is the main reason I haven't given in to the temptation to gift all our cities to FinHarry and resign to AI.
I guess the flip side to my rant is...the turn rolled almost 12 hours ago. And we now have 8/33 players played. That means there are people who aren't even trying to play quickly - I'd expect closer to 15 by now if people were serious about trying for a 24h turn. Notably, neither Boldly nor GermanJojo has played .
Azza seems to have decided to use the Open Borders for mutual scouting - his galley went forward rather than back. I'm going to shadow it with a pair of galleys in case we end up at war again.
I did find an Arabian catapult this turn . We might be stuck until Knights. Well - except for Dental Plan - we're regaining one of its first-ring tiles this turn, and I think we'll keep it this time. Which ought to mean we can set up a 1-turn strike that can't be preempted. Azza would see it prepared, but I don't know there's much he could do about it. If we can set that up quickly - well, the thing about cats is they're godly in critical mass with hitters, but pretty sad when trickling in. Dunno if it's worth it, though. We can certainly get to Knights before Azza does.
Finally the SpanArabian people shall be ruled by a strong hand, one which can put an end to their endless fighting and indifferent rulership.
Ok, so post PB13 Fintourist was pretty upset by people who folded. Therefore, we won't make this easy for him. But I still expect to be out of here in under 50 turns .
