"Greens" Pitboss with Mentors?

Hey all!

I'm wondering about the possibility for setting up such a game again, following the standard RB rules instead of what we did in the last one I participated in with full diplo and so forth so forth. There are several aspects of the game I would really like to learn, that is hard to learn without hands on experience - and you can only learn so much by reading the game threads for the Pitbosses that are currently running, or have been archived, before you need to test things out yourself.

For this to work I envision we need at least 6-7 Green players (me being one of them, and I guess an upper limit of 12 players/teams or something like that?), and a similar amount of Mentors who would be team mates for the Greens. The Greens should be the ones doing the actual playing, while the Mentors take on a ded-lurk role where they can also log in to the game on the Civ they are mentoring whenever they want to look at things to make suggestions etc. Screenshots and turn reporting can be lacking, and also it's not so great to have turn reports that are flooded with way too many screenshots (as other lurkers will find that annoying) so it's important that the Mentors have the option to log in and take a look around for themselves.

One question is whether to use a mod, or to just use the base game. The latest version of RtR has a lot of neat features that is helpful in case of game crashes (particularly the extra generated autosaves are extremely nice, and observer mode is fun for the lurkers) - but perhaps it is possible to remove the RtR modifications and run with these features on the base BTS setting too, if that's the best. However, since I feel quite at home here on RB, and most RBers seem to be a bit tired of the base BTS game, I suspect either the RtR or the Tides of War mod would be a good idea to use since most games these days seem to use one of these anyways?

I will of course host the game if we get enough interest smile

Cool idea. Greens as in bad at civ, or as in new at PBEM/PB?

Such a mod is actually being maintained in the GitHub project for the RtR dll. It's called the Observer mod - It's just normal Beyond the Sword 3.19 with bug fixes, support for observer mode, pitboss portal, and extra autosaves.

Here's a download that can be used for this game if there is any interest.

Thanks! smile

Both I would assume, since I doubt the Mentors cares either way. Besides, someone who is very good at SP Civ, but have no experience with MP, is most likely not a good MP player, considering the massive changes bringing humans instead of AIs into the equation brings.

That is actually one of the reasons I suggested this, because no matter how much I read on RB I don't get hands on experience by playing SP as the AIs are a completely different story than humans. Some war declarations from an AI would simpy never ever happen if a human played the Civ in the same situation, and the AIs are extremely predictable (even Monty, who is notoriously unreliable is predictable in that he will declare war at some random interval).

I know we humans are also predictable in the sense that when you know someone's play style you can to a certain extent predict what said player will do, but there's always the random factor that said player has decided to test something completely different, which means you may have to adapt quickly to something completely unexpected.

That is great to know too. That means we have the option to play with or without RtR, based on what the players wish. Thanks smile

I am interested in playing either as a green or a mentor, based on the perceived skill level of whoever has interest in teaming up with me.

Kidding aside, I think I know enough to be a mentor (for someone really green), although the first rule a green will have to learn if he wants to team up with me is "losing is fun". neenerneener

I would be interested, as a green. I washed up here along with FUTURE LEGEND GermanJoey but have very little MP experience in Civ.

I would be interested in participating. Whether I can depends on getting my Mac's Steamworks Civ IV Direct IP Connection to work, which it doesn't.
