Attention! I am debugging the crash/freeze issues now. All games have been saved - but the server may crash/freeze within the next hour. Playing will commence at your own risk.

Okay - debugging complete! And I feel pretty safe we've found the solution, unless the server freezes within the next 30-60 minutes of course..

A network socket that wasn't closed properly (playing in windowed mode, pressing the X to close the window, and thus Civ), so the server was banging it's head trying to send packets to an ip that didn't want to receive them.

Based on a PM I just received, I thought I'd mention that it might be a good idea for people to actually post here in the unified thread if their computer crashes while connected to the game. Normally a crash of Civ doesn't leave an open socket, but it can occur. I have no idea how common computer crashes or Civ crashes while in game are, as I rarely experience them on my desktop computer, so if it means we get thread spammed with various crash reports it probably isn't such a great idea after all, but let's go with it for now.
Basically what I am also saying is that similar freezes can occur in the case that someone has a crash while logged in, and that reporting here might be a good idea so that both the players and I become aware.

So much for that. The server just froze up again. I'm going to install VMWare and make a proper virtual machine for the Pitbosses now.

The games will continue to be down for several more hours. I am almost done with the Virtual Machine, but I am also running some diagnostics on the server to eliminate the possibility of a hardware malfunction. If the latter should prove to be the issue, all the parts are under warranty.

No, Thank you, Old Harry (and the rest of you guys), for your continued patience and non-pitchfork & torch mentality.
I have to admit that I am finding all the technical difficulties we've had these past months very tiresome, and it makes me quite sad that the games are so often unavailable, so many reloads taking place that mean people have to replay their turns over and over. And all this on a computer that is more or less state of the art, with a quad core Intel i5 3Ghz Haswell could, 8 GB Ram, an SSD system disk, a brand new NAS-quality HD which the community here on RB was generosity itself with donating money so I could continue to host your games . And yet, with all that fancy computer hardware, the server crashes and freezes over and over again, leaving me completely lost as to what the cause(s) may be. I've Googled a lot to find possible solutions, and indeed there are many reports of Wintendo Server 2012 having random hangs, but all those problems have long since been fixed in various hotfixes released by Microsoft, and thus already patched into my OS, as I regularly run Windows Update.
I hope pushing the games over in a separate virtual machine helps, and I hope that we don't get the timer issue we ran into when I attempted to make a Hyper-V (different virtualisation software than what I am using now - VMWare for the technically interested ones). I believe that issue was related specifically to Hyper-V though.
The games will be up shortly now though, so we shall soon see.

Okay, the VM is done, and the Pitbosses are now running. So far it looks as if the timer is functioning exactly as it should, but we'll have to monitor it over the next days to see if it actually performs properly. Last time we noticed the issue after a day or two.
So, here is the usual list of reload and replay candidates :
PB18: Reloaded from zanth - zanth and TBS also needs to replay
PB20: Reloaded from retep - retep needs to replay
PB21: Reloaded from zanth - zanth and Gagavai needs to replay
PB22: Reloaded from 2metraninja - no need to replay as I was able to use the logout autosave
Please everyone, pay attention to the game timers, and if there are weird deviations report here.
