I'll be following this with interest. Was thinking about buying, but couldn't find any reviews I trusted.

Well, I ended up finding a few hours to get the first 20 turns in, rather than a turn by turn account I will just try to give an overview of the 20 turns by feature as it where.

Firstly I mentioned the various city states that are in each region, here is a summary of all the ones I met in the 20 turns showing the unit types and bonuses for controlling them:

I also met another major civ:

These are the various technologies I researched during the first 20 turns. Focus on exploration to pop the huts as best i can early (which ties into my civ quest) Then looking at buildings that improve food then hammers, finally I started on the melee unit in order to screen my archers

You get a fairly simple pop up after completing each tech

I ended up founding in place, as i wasn't sure if the ground of the city spot made a big difference to the city. As it happens the city spot gives a set plus and minus to the tile rather than standardising it within parameters like Civ 4.

First built the Palace equivalent, before building the following items in the city:

Note, on the above picture, top middle, you can see the area where you can assign citizens to work on a specific resource and the bonus per citizen for them too. From what I could see there is no overflow on resources, so I was adjusting these turn by turn to get the best production

Again you get a basic pop up on completing any building:

This ended up making my city site end up looking as follows:

If you see towards the top of the map, there are 3 special tile types, as follows:

The settler went East into the forest area to found this city:

My hero's progression was as follows:

First i provided a ring for him

Then swapped the crossbow he had for what I feel is a better bow

On his first level up i increased the unit speed on the map

Then second level I had a think about the various options available, before going for speed once again (this increased the unit speed on map from the initial 4 up to the current 6)

I have talked about quests, so far I have come across 2 different types, the main Civ questline, and the smaller quests from the city states.

On the main quest line, I have made the following progress:

With the city state quests, I have been given the following (note candaray is the region that seems heavily wooded next to me I wanted to expand into):

To give you an idea of what you can get from huts in this game, here is a sample of the results I have got:

The social policies you can choose every 20 turns looks something like the below (despite having a quest asking me to go for economy and population, i decided that city state wasn't that important right now and I wanted to keep the focus on scouting)

The below is an indication of the sort of status info pages you can get in the game, not that different from civ really:

So combat. The city states essentially work as barb villages in this game and occasionally kick out a marauding army. I ended up picking a fight with one of these.

Note this is the reason (as well as about a 1 in 10 chance of popping barbarians from huts) that I explored with a single army rather than splitting my forces up to explore faster.

Anyway the initial balance screen pops up as below, on it you can set the default characteristics for the units in the battle, not these can be adjusted individually during the battle itself.

The battle plays out over about 6 turns if needed, you get to set your units up within a certain area based on the approaching angles of the 2 units on the world map, then set orders each turn, if no orders given or if they have movement left then they use the set defaults.

Playing around a bit more on a separate game, seems at least if you set a construction queue, that hammers do carry over.

In fact having checked you can actually complete 2 builds in 1 turn
