But, um, who's HAK?

Fixed. Mixed up REM and HAK. The other was my neighbor in PB18.

Everything is chugging along, here's an overview shot:

Retep canceled OB to stop my scout. I'm pretty disappointed by that, I thought we'd be natural allies, but he is scared of me. I suppose I've earned that warmonger reputation biggrin
We still have foreign trade routes in every city with just Cornflakes and Bob. We're starting to share a big border with Bob to the east, and I kinda regret letting him scout me.

Retep beat us to 8 cities. However his GNP has tanked, so I don't feel too bad!

We finished Calendar. I forgot that we had sugar under the capital, so we actually get FOUR unique happiness resources out of this.
Masonry will only take 2 turns, then we can hook up marble and chop the Mausoleum. ~10 turns to next Great Scientist as well, which will be burned for a Golden Age once Mausoleum is up and running.

Bob settled a border city. He'll fight for the cows, but it doesn't seem like he expects us to be enemies or he would have settled that city on a hill.

We have a problem. A game-deciding problem. I got visibility on REM's research after ending my turn, he's teching Machinery. It's a beeline for Guilds and a Cataphract rush.
I don't know if we can get Engineering before he can get Guilds+HBR. Guilds is an expensive tech, so that's good. 1000 beakers. To put that into perspective, it would take me 38 turns with current tech rate at 20%. Machinery is 700 and Feudalism 700, and he needs those for Guilds.
However Engineering alone is also 1000, and it requires Machinery (700) and Construction (350). Currency (400) is a must to speed up teching, and I need IW and iron to build pikes.
We have to start preparing. He only neighbors me and Bob, we can't rely on luck to not get rushed. I have some ideas.

We got Masonry. Onwards to Currency now.

Cornflakes lost a city to Bob. It seems that Cornflakes was overextending, that city was 8 tiles from his capital and only 4 from Bob's. Anyway, fights between the others are good news for us, as long as one side doesn't get obliterated.

I figured that a city 3 tiles from my capital would be safe to postpone for a while. I was wrong. We'll have to raze Retep's city, but at least we don't have to build a workboat for the crab anymore mischief
Alternatively we could settle on the X sign if we don't want to fight an endless war over a meaningless filler city.
Bob joined Cornflakes in giving REM open borders. Why do they want to give the Great Lighthouse owner trade routes? It sounds like a terrible idea.

Mausoleum of Maussollos will be done in 5 turns. I only had 3 forests to chop for it, but the base production rate is great. We'll have a brand new Great Scientist in 3 turns, and Currency in 3 or 4 turns. We'll launch a Golden Age right after Mausoleum. We've been growing our cities since we got the Calendar happiness (#1 in Pop for the first time!). Let's see if I can get this snowball rolling. After Currency we're going to research Code of Laws and Civil Service.

I love you Commodore. That's REM's source of iron. No iron, no cataphracts. Let's hope this works.

We finished Currency and got +15 GPT increase from trade routes. We could have whipped Mausoleum this turn, but no-one has any Calendar resources hooked up so I don't think we're in a race.

I'll let you know in 2 turns when I launch it. It should be possible!
