EitB PBEM XXXIX Setup and Tech Thread
|
Kragroth, I have mafia to do my arguing in, I don't need to do it with you, and I don't intend to. Those are the standard settings (literally copied from the setup for PBEM EitB XXXVI with a couple of obvious changes).

Oh and duplicates not allowed, leaders chosen by pming preferences to DaveV who then posts results in thread, with ties decided randomly.

Q. If the majority vote for those, fine. But that's all there is to it. It'd be nice to have a game that didn't depend on barb farming.
Krag, barbs are an essential part of the game, and affect certain leaders and civs considerably. The teamer was an exception, not the rule (and thus you already have your game that doesn't depend on barb farming).
The point being, I made the post about regular settings and there wasn't any vocal disagreement (indeed, you asked for raging barbs!). Given that, I don't think anyone feels too strongly so we might as well just say the settings are thus and move on. We don't need a whole stage of people voting on minutia, especially as DaveV has limited time to work on the map.

FWIW, I'm happy with Q's settings; sorry I didn't post that earlier.
DaveV, the order looks good to me.
Barbs are a major imbalance part of the game and no more essential than tech trading. Yes, there are single player elements that do not translate well and balanced into a competitive multiplayer game. Your love of barb xp farming and comments calling this highly unnecessary this unbalanced single player element as essential is highly disturbing from the de facto mod leader of a mod that's supposed to be about balance!
Regarding the earlier comments here. I'm fine with an occasional beer and pretzels fun unbalanced game. But north star had a better point, just play vanilla ffh for that. So that should be the unbalanced game. In fact, it would be nice if we could get Dave to make the map for that too. Third, no, a lack of comments is not consensus. We got that from eitb pbem xxxviii . It goes both ways and we should not be rushed.
Oh and by the way, if you do decide to be imbalanced and be barbs, you go all the way and have lairs and dungeons too.
Kragroth, please stop insulting me, and this community. Barbarians are integral to the way the game is played, on a level tech trading is not. TT flies sharply in contrast with some of the themes of FFH - different tech lines with focus on going deep rewarded - whilst the game is directly designed around barbarians, with certain mechanics (barbarian trait, Sidar, AC, the very balance of XP) presupposing their use. You may well state that you prefer the feel of the game played without them, and that is your prerogative, but don't categorically state things that an entire community of players, with dozens of high-skilled and competitive games under their belt disagrees with.
You'll note that before '38 came along, no (ffh) game here had been played without barbs. This, in nearly 40 games and 4 years of activity. That is because we, as a community, have felt and do feel that barbs are a integral part of the game. You'll note also that I've only been here for half of that time, and coded EitB for only the last 6 months. This community opinion is one that predates me, and that I have no particular stake in so don't imply that I am the cause of it. Not to mention that I've played all of one finished FFH game, kn a ream, and that I am not the "mod leader", merely the one who does the coding work. I'm flattered that you think me so influential. I hope you understand why I find this slur offensive to me, and to the community, and I'd ask that you'd cease making such authoritative statements about this mod and what the wider community thinks of it. You'll note that I never state things categorically, and simply note my, or others, opinions of it. I'd hardly want to impose my own mindset on you, but perhaps you could consider taking a similar approach. Back to the game settings. I have one person agreeing with me, one disagreeing. For now, that's 2v1, but even supposing North chooses to vote against, we'd need a tiebreaker, which I would be (as thread starter) so can we just go with the settings I proposed and be done with it?
