A couple of points though Q. Yes, you're probably right Northstar may not support me (he seems to be a barb farmer as well). But there are a couple more salient points such as lairs. You listed Lairs as mapmaker's choice. Well, my vote is that if there's barbs, there's lairs. So there's things like that that need to be adjucated exactly. Moreover, we already rely on a mapmaker to be impartial any way in how they design the map.

So yes, we need a codified list of settings

Lairs: Mapmakers discretion.

Huts: Mapmakers discretion.

I would never vote for mapmaker's discretion. For me it'd be Yes and No. And the Mapmaker has to specify this before we choose our civs.

Kragroth, do you think you could be a little less condescending towards people who don't share your opinions. That would go a long way towards getting others to listen to what you're saying rather than dismissing it out of hand.

I suspect that Northstar is not posting because of the negative atmosphere in this thread ... I know that's what I have been doing.

Oh please don't make assumptions like that. It's still the holidays. We should verify participation

See above comment about condescension. Also note that I clearly said "suspicion", which is very different from an assumption.

This is my last comment. You don't clear the air by making an attack. Intimating that one suspects that the other person is not talking because of you is an attack.

What we need is a final verification of the map settings and not mapmaker's pick and from North Star again.

I get the feeling that might work well wink

Kragroth, a) Mapmaker discretion is a valid setting. You may disagree with it, but it has been used in the past, and is a valid option, b) I think you overreacted greatly to Dreylin's comment.

Like I said, I really hate to do this, but as far as I'm concerned the settings have been decided, and we're just spinning our wheels atm.

I can live with being overruled in votes. Democracy wins is ok. Map maker can have all the discretion they want, but I need to know whether lairs or tribal villiages are in from the mapmaker. That's a huge impact on civ and leader choice.

So, here's my plan for the map:

SevenSpirit's Mirrorland script.

I know Q said he didn't want a mirrored map, but a non-mirrored balanced map is kind of the holy grail. If the players are willing to put up with a potentially substantial amount of imbalance, I'm perfectly willing to use a different script, but I think Mirrorland produces a very playable map with very good balance. In other words: I'm not going to spend a ton of time balancing a map; you'll have to live with the results or find another map maker. Assuming Mirrorland is OK, I plan to do the following:

1. Settings: 8 players, Standard size, Monarch difficulty, Quick speed, Discovery Era, Inland Seas, no scattered improvements, normal barbs, no tech trading, no vassals, no Orthus, no Acheron, no huts, no lairs, no unique features, living world.
2. Generate a bunch of 8-player random maps to get an interesting map with good resource locations. Eliminate four of the players. This seems to result in ~1300 land tiles.
3. Hand place a few ruins at choke points. The ruins will have Held, Hidden Nationality units on top, to prevent Barbarian civs from moving through them. If anyone is killed by an early lizardman: don't say you weren't warned.
4. Possibly place some unique features if I think the map needs it, or if I'm bored.
5. I plan to give everyone a worker at the start. Since there's no disparity in worker techs and the early game is infamously slow, I see this as a benefit to the game. I'll gladly forego this addition at the players' request; it's your game and I'm not going to dictate how it's set up.

This map will have a lot of water, and naval action will have a lot of impact on the game. An early rush will be impossible. Toroidal wrap is on, so city costs will be higher than normal.

I just thought I'd point out that as a member of this community, I'm not insulted in the least by Kragroth's desire to play a No Barbarians game. smile

I hope you guys are able to agree on settings and enjoy the game. If not, there is always the option of playing separate games.

Happy new year, everyone.
I have to run.
